Among them was the claim that Diana would be forgotten “soon enough” just days after her death amid an alleged row over William and Harry’s involvement in the funeral. It comes after Earl Spencer accused King Charles of “gaslighting” him as the row over Diana’s memoir continues. The Earl was slammed as “cruel” for saying “giddy” Charles behaved like an “elated lottery winner” when delivering news of the fatal car crash in August 1997. And he has doubled down on his claims, insisting he’s “telling the truth” about the then-Prince going “ballistic” at him during the phone call. And he told the BBC how his infamous eulogy at her funeral in Westminster Abbey was a direct response to Charles’ comments. “There was a reason why those words were in my eulogy,” he said. The Earl also revealed it was his “duty” to write the memoir as an “eyewitness to history”, insisting the book “is just the reality”. This comes after he claimed money, including a reported advance of up to £1million, had “never even been the remotest consideration” in publishing his book. He claimed King Charles told him he was “lucky” to have inherited his fortune so young. “This is not a threat, it’s a fact, I know lots of things about the King which I chose not to include in the book because they were not relevant,” he told the BBC. In a rare and extraordinary move this week, the Palace issued a furious riposte to the allegations, where they denied the Earl’s claims. It said: “His Majesty is mindful the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and colour memory in ways others do not recognise, even many years after such a loss.” A friend of the King, who last week hosted an AI summit in Scotland, also hit back, telling The Sunday Times: “He is saddened that the sorrows of old are being dragged up again. “The King was rather more concerned about the future of mankind than the unkind claims of one man picking at the scars of the past.” Charles says he wants to tell the “truth” about his sister in the book, due to be published in days, ahead of the 30th anniversary of her death.
