My baby boy was found dead after he failed to wake up for a feed – I told doctors to stop CPR on his tiny, fragile body

JUST one day before his death, baby Enzo-Adane was “thriving”, medics told his mum Nina, at his three-month check-up. Yet, within 24 hours the family was left heartbroken after their “perfectly healthy” baby boy died, after failing to wake up one morning. Once at hospital, doctors worked on the baby for over an hour as his distraught parents watched on, until mum-of-two Nina Fallon asked them to stop. She told Sun Health: “I knew he wasn’t coming back after an hour of them trying and his body was so little. “I didn’t want them on him pounding anymore. I just wanted him to be left alone. Enzo-Adane was born on 5 June 2025 following a healthy pregnancy and natural birth with no complications Credit: Jam Press Nina says it was “hell” waiting to find out the cause of her son’s death Credit: Jam Press “They’d done everything they could, but he’d been gone for too long. “Enzo-Adane wasn’t coming back, I knew that in my heart and I just wanted him to be at peace.” It was determined that Enzo-Adane died from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) – the unexplained death of an infant that occurs when they’re asleep. There are a number of things that can increase the risk of a baby dying of SIDS. But tragically Nina says she did “everything right” and still lost her boy. Nina, a hotel chef from Dublin, says: “The day before he passed away, he had a visit to the nurse for his three-month check-up and she said he was perfect and thriving. “Me and his dad are together but not living with each other at the minute so the last time I saw Enzo-Adane, I dropped him off as usual. “Everything was normal. He would wake up twice in the night and nap through the day. “Adane-Joshua gave him a bottle at 5am and when he checked on him at 8am he was unresponsive. When she arrived, around 15 medics were desperately trying to save the tot’s life. Nina, who is also mum to Eden-Asher, three, says: “Seeing him surrounded by all those doctors was petrifying. “He was so fragile and tiny. They worked on him for an hour, and I told them to leave him alone. “They handed him to me and I held him and kissed him for half an hour. “It was heartbreaking. I was so confused and I just didn’t understand. “Then we had to wait for answers and that was hell. “He was supposed to be getting christened 10 days after he passed away, so I went from arranging his christening to arranging his funeral. “I was in overdrive.” What is sudden infant death syndrome? Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is the sudden and unexpected death of a baby under the age of 12 months where no cause is found. Around 89 per cent of deaths happen when the tot is under six months old. It is relatively rare, with 182 babies dying from SIDS in the UK in 2021. While doctors don’t know exactly what triggers it, there are ways to significantly reduce the chances of SIDS occurring: Put your baby on their back for all sleeps – day and night Share a room with your baby for the first six months Place your baby on their own, clear, flat sleep surface (e.g. cot or Moses basket) Keep your baby smoke-free during pregnancy and after birth Never sleep on a sofa or armchair Do not co-sleep if you or anyone in the bed has been drinking alcohol, smoking, or taking drugs or medication that makes you drowsy These things are especially important for babies who were born prematurely or of a low birth weight, as they are typically at higher risk of SIDS. Source: The Lullaby Trust RiSudden infant death syndrome An autopsy carried out after Enzo-Adane’s death in September 2025 eventually confirmed in March that he had died from SIDS. It’s very rare, causing 188 deaths a year in the UK. Risk factors include being born early (before 37 weeks), as well as sleeping conditions, such as sharing a bed with a baby. Nina says: “It was just complete shock. We’d never experienced SIDs in our family. “It broke my heart even more when we found out. “It was hard to accept and even harder that there was no one to point the finger at. “I’ll just always have to question why this happened.” Nina says the reality of losing her son has only recently begun to sink in. She says: “Life without him is so hard. I miss him every day. “He was such a happy baby and he loved socialising. “He was so advanced – he was laughing at two months old. “Enzo-Adane was spunky and he completed the family. “Only the last couple of months the reality has kicked in that he’s no longer here. “Luckily, Eden-Asher was so young that he didn’t know what was going on, but I let him see Enzo and kiss him goodbye before the funeral. “He knew in a way – you could tell because kids are smarter than we think. “Eden-Asher is the only thing that’s kept me going. If I didn’t have him, I don’t know where I’d be.” Enzo-Adane was born on June 5, 2025 following a healthy pregnancy and natural birth with no complications. Nina says: “Enzo-Adane was a surprise and I was nervous because Eden-Asher was still young and I would have two under two. “It was a quick, smooth birth that only took an hour and there were no complications or issues. “When I held Enzo-Adane for the first time, all the nerves faded away. He was perfect. “I’d been hoping for a boy for my older son and Eden-Asher was over the moon when he met his little brother.” Nina is sharing her family’s story to raise awareness that SIDS can strike without warning. She adds: “There’s just no warning. I was so strict. “There were no toys or blankets in the cot and he was always flat on his back. “You can do everything you’re supposed to do and this can still happen.”
