Musician who identified as non-binary 'raped his date as they celebrated New Year's Eve after meeting on Bumble', court hears

A musician who identified as non-binary raped his date after they met on Bumble, a court has heard. Sab Cox, a biological male, allegedly attacked the woman, a biological female, as they celebrated New Year's Eve on December 31, 2022. The 26-year-old, who at the time went by the name Sabrina but now uses male pronouns, is accused of raping his date after becoming aggressive and asserting that he was the 'guy' in the relationship, the Old Bailey heard.Cox, who is heavily built and has a shaved head, had met the biological woman who is non-binary on the dating app Bumble.On the evening of the alleged rape he had travelled from Birmingham to celebrate the New Year with them at a bar in Islington, north London, the court heard. The defendant, who appeared in court wearing a grey three-piece suit, denies rape and claims the sex was consensual. But prosecutor Simon Ward told jurors that things became a 'bit tense' on the bus ride back to the complainant's bedsit.Cox, from Llansamlet near Swansea, south Wales, allegedly 'took exception' to the way someone was looking at his date and punched a window. 'The position has changed in relation to the defendant. He refers to himself as "he" and "him."'Describing the incident to police, the complainant said: 'Apparently somebody was looking at me and they (Cox) got angry and punched the window of the bus.'We are both non-binary so gender did not come into it. They said "I see myself as a guy and you're a girl and I have to protect you". 'I was really confused, like I don't know what you mean.'When they got back to the bedsit, Cox allegedly initiated sex with the complainant.On being told to stop repeatedly, Cox allegedly responded: 'I don't care.'After the complainant started to cry, Cox allegedly said he was 'sorry' and added: 'I know I've done something bad. I've taken advantage of you.'He left without his bags and when he reached Drayton Park station told the complainant in a phone call to 'listen to this' and jumped on the tracks, jurors heard.The alleged victim then called police. Under cross-examination in court, the complainant said they felt 'uncomfortable' about what Cox had said on the bus earlier that night.John Traversi, defending, asked if Cox's comments made them feel differently about him.The complainant replied: 'No, I was just confused about what had been presented previously.'The court heard that the defendant told police the sex was consensual.The Times reports that when police questioned Cox, he corrected an officer for referring to the alleged victim as 'she'.He said the complainant 'was assigned female at birth so are biologically female but identifies as non-binary so does not associate with male or female'.Cox told the court he had sex with the alleged victim 'numerous times' and that he 'was in love with her and enjoyed spending time with her'.In a statement read to the court, the complainant's mother said her 'daughter' told her the day after the alleged attack that she 'had been seriously sexually assaulted by Sabrina'.The trial continues.
