Music legend Phil Collins’ son Mathew, 21, joins former Bundesliga champions in shock transfer

PHIL COLLINS’ son Mathew is looking to make his mark on the football world after completing a surprise transfer to former Bundesliga champions 1860 Munich. The 21-year-old midfielder has signed a one-year contract with the German outfit after impressing during a trial spell. And 1860 Munich confirmed the signing on Friday as they prepare for life in Germany’s fourth tier. The historic club now compete in the Regionalliga after suffering relegation from the 3. Liga when they failed to secure the licence required to remain in the division. Despite their current struggles, 1860 boast one of the richest histories in German football. They were founder members of the Bundesliga in 1963 and famously won the German title during the 1965-66 campaign. The club have also lifted the German Cup twice and reached the 1965 European Cup Winners’ Cup final, where they were beaten by West Ham at Wembley. Collins began his career in the academies of Astoria Walldorf and Hannover 96 before moving to Austrian side WSG Tirol in 2023. Last season he made four league appearances for Austria Salzburg and also featured once in the Austrian Cup. He linked up with his new teammates ahead of their opening league match, a 2-2 draw away to FC Schweinfurt. While Mathew is chasing his football dream, his famous father became one of the biggest names in music history. Collins rose to fame as drummer and later lead singer of Genesis before launching a hugely successful solo career with hits including In the Air Tonight and You Can’t Hurry Love. The music icon, who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame both with Genesis and as a solo artist, has five children, including actress Lily Collins, musician Simon Collins, actress and producer Joely Collins, and Mathew’s brother Nic.
