The family were all found in bed on Monday afternoon in their home in the Rome suburb of Pietralata. Emergency services were called after relatives of Luca Abbasciano, 42, Valentina Pambianco, 41, and Bianca, five, couldn't get in contact with them for hours. Carabinieri and firefighters broke down the door at 1pm to find the tragic family dead with gunshot wounds, along with the family dog who had also been shot dead. Around their bodies, local media reported, were dozens of letters addressed to loved ones containing apologies, explanations and instructions for the future. In a letter Luca wrote to his sister, who raised the alarm, he asked her to 'take care of dad'.Among the messages left by Luca and Valentina was one that read: 'We can't do this alone.'Sara, their neighbour, told local media: 'They had wanted this little girl so much, but she was born with many problems. They feared she wouldn't live long, and this was wearing them down.'Police are still investigating the incident, and are trying to reconstruct the family's final hours. Nicolina Barbato, a neighbour, said: 'When [Valentina] got pregnant, she was the picture of happiness.'But the couple had reportedly been struggling with caring for Bianca, who was born prematurely and with a severe disability, since her 2021 birth. Luca's brother said the couple were so desperate for help that they had been planning to travel to Mexico for specialist treatment. They closed themselves off from the world, with Valentina leaving her job to look after Bianca full-time and Luca, an IT technician, further renovating the home into a workshop so he never had to leave his family alone. Massimiliano Umberti, a local politician, told La Repubblica: 'Bianca no longer went to nursery school because she was often sick.'Neighbours said the isolation took a toll on the parents. Cristina, a local, said she would run into Valentina while walking her dog: 'In the afternoons, she would stand in the entrance hall with her high chair and watch her dog, Teo, wagging his tail around her. But Valentina had lost her smile after giving birth.'And Umberti said: 'I didn't know them, but I know the child was severely disabled and that the family was being cared for by our social services. 'We had contacted them. For this reason, faced with what happened, we feel helpless.'Loneliness is the greatest evil in the world today.'
