Mumbai police issues order barring assembly of five or more persons from September 9 to 23

The Mumbai police on Saturday (September 5, 2026) released a preventive order prohibiting the assembly of five or more persons for the period commencing on September 9 and ending on September 23 in Mumbai. The order was issued based on the information received from various sources that there is a likelihood of breach of peace and disturbance of public tranquillity and a grave danger to human lives and loss of properties.“...it is considered expedient to issue a prohibitory order for restricting movement and unlawful assembly of five or more persons for the prevention of breach of peace, disturbance to public tranquillity and danger to human lives and loss of properties and to prevent any kind of riot or affray in the areas under the control of Commissioner of Police, Brihanmumbai,” the order statement read.The order period will cover the 10-day Ganeshotsav festival, which starts on September 14 and ends with Anant Chaturdashi (visarjan/immersion day) on September 23.Akbar Pathan, Dy. Commissioner of Police (Operations), prohibits the procession of any persons, the use of loudspeakers, amplifying instruments, musical band and bursting of crackers in any procession by the assembly.“I further direct that this order will be published and promulgated in Brihanmumbai by affixing copies thereof, in conspicuous part of public places; courts, government offices and by proclaiming the same through loudspeakers or megaphones as well as publishing through media of whatever form available,” said Mr. Pathan. ExemptionsThe prohibition exempted marriage ceremonies, matrimonial functions, funeral assemblies and processions on the way to crematoriums/burial places, statutory meetings of companies, clubs, co-operative societies, other societies and associations, social gatherings and meetings of clubs, co-operative societies, other societies and associations to transact their normal business.It exempts assemblies in or around cinema houses, theatres or any place of public amusement for the purpose of watching films, dramas or performances, assemblies in or around courts of law and offices of the government and local bodies in discharge of governmental or semi-governmental functions.The order said that If is violated, any penalty, forfeiture of punishments incurred in respect of any contravention of this order may be imposed, the order said.
