MTG Universes Beyond Continues To Print Money For Wizards Of The Coast

The Hobbit Is Officially The Fourth-Best-Selling MTG Set Of All Time Published Oct 20, 2026, 4:35 PM EDT Niall (pronounced Ny-ul) is a UK-based writer who has been writing about Magic: The Gathering throughout his entire career, with everything from new set breakdowns and individual deck guides to offering his opinions on the state of formats and the general direction of the iconic TCG. Niall also has a rich history covering triple-A releases, sports games, and PC hardware. Hasbro's quarterly financial report shows that Magic: The Gathering remains an unstoppable force, with revenue growing 34% in Q3 2026 to $1.6 billion year-to-date. This recent growth was largely thanks to the huge success of The Hobbit, which has already become the fourth-best-selling set of all time. Reality Fracture also exceeded expectations despite ongoing shipping issues, but given the proximity of its release to the production of these figures, it hasn't had a chance to break any records (yet). Most notable, however, is that despite Magic: The Gathering's rampant success, it still wasn't enough to prevent a huge round of layoffs at Wizards of the Coast in recent weeks. Magic Is Enjoying A Historic Boom Period It's hard to look at the hard facts and figures associated with Magic: The Gathering and come to any other conclusion than "the game is thriving." Naturally, this report and the associated call didn't explicitly mention the ongoing distribution issues the game is facing, but then again, why would it? With back-to-back record-breaking growth across two three-month periods, all Hasbro cares about right now is that Magic is a money-making machine, but this didn't just happen overnight. The gradual build of Magic: The Gathering started with the introduction of Universes Beyond as Standard-legal sets. It's still a highly contentious decision today, but the results speak for themselves. Another feather in The Hobbit's cap is that it had the highest prerelease participation of any Universes Beyond set, and that's just factoring in data from the 13,000 WPN stores. Magic is in a great place, and rather than worry about it being a bubble or letting too much negativity drown out the successes, we have to give credit where it is due and enjoy what is easily one of the biggest boom periods the game has ever experienced. If only this news didn't come right after a round of layoffs, which feels confusing given the company's clear financial success. Don't Expect Any More Records To Be Broken In Q4 Despite Magic: The Gathering's strong ongoing performance, Hasbro warns it expects a drop-off in Q4, with only one set launching and certain products pushed to Q1 2027 or brought forward to Q3. Reality Fracture may still generate some ongoing interest and sales that boost numbers, and Secret Lair continues to churn out products at an almost alarming rate, but time will tell how big the Q4 drop-off is. It's worth pointing out that despite expecting a drop-off, year-on-year growth comparing Q4 2026 and Q4 2025 may still show growth in favor of 2026, just to a much lower degree than we've seen in the last two quarters. The good news is that Q1 2027 is expected to produce another "big spike" with the arrival of Nauctis: The Sunken Realm, which will kickstart the 2027 MTG calendar in style.
