Mount Albert Grammar School confirms student fatally struck by train

Mount Albert Grammar School has confirmed one of its students died following an incident at Baldwin Avenue Train Station on Wednesday.In a statement, headmaster Patrick Drumm said their thoughts were with the family of the boy and they were actively being supported."This morning the school has been focused on supporting staff and students who are also deeply affected by this loss. Our guidance team and pastoral staff are working closely with students and will continue to do so in the time ahead."We are grateful for the huge amount of support we are receiving from the wider educational community and beyond."A westbound train passes the Rossgrove Terrace level crossing before stopping at Baldwin Ave station on Thursday morning.RNZ / Erin JohnsonRNZ understands students at the school had earlier been told to gather for an assembly.Police said they had spoken to high school students who were at the Baldwin Avenue Station when the boy was hit by a train at 3.28pm on Wednesday.Drumm said the school was operating as normal - continuing with the senior exam timetable."We respect the family's privacy at this time and keep them in our prayers and thoughts."Auckland Transport said Western Line train services were operating as normal, although there may be occasional cancellations.Inspector Kerry Watson said police had notified next of kin "and the community will appreciate that this will be devastating news for them".Family members were seen crying at the station on Wednesday night."Anyone who may have witnessed what happened, and who hasn't spoken to police, are asked to make contact," Watson said.
