Simon Levy was a prolific sex offender over a seven-year period, yet time and again he was either released early or let off completely to continue his vile crimes. In May the same year he sexually assaulted multiple women on trains, but was bailed again, and a rape inquiry was closed because the police said they had trouble tracing the homeless victim. Two months later, he missed two Crown court hearings but no arrest warrant was made, and the following month — August 2025 — he murdered 39-year-old mother of four Sheryl Wilkins in a London car park. And now a blame game has started. Met Police commissioner Sir Mark Rowley said: “There’s no-one from the court service, no one from the CPS, no one from probation stepping forward and talking about their failures.” He went on to say the police see victims being let down ‘day in and day out’ and cited a case where ‘a sex offender who should have been remanded in custody’ was bailed to ‘an address two doors down from his victim.’ The head of the CPS has since apologised for leaving Levy free on bail to kill two women and rape a third, but one suspects this will be of little comfort to the victims and their families. Levy, 40, has now been handed a whole life order and will never leave prison. At his sentencing, Sheryl’s mother Mary told him that her daughter “has saved countless women from being subjected to your disgusting and horrendous acts. You are a threat to all women.” But Sheryl shouldn’t have had to save anyone. The justice system should have saved her.
