The married dad raped, abused and attempted to murder nine women including five sex workers as well as a female he preyed upon after she contacted police for help. Sign up for The Sun newsletter Thank you! Greer took his own life weeks after being exposed when anti- corruption officers raided his home in Wishaw, Lanarkshire, and seized evidence. The Police Scotland constable’s shattered family were said to be completely oblivious to his double life. As an insider likened the fiend to Met killer Couzens, top cops insisted there were “no red flags” during his 17 years of service. But rank-and-file chiefs warned it would be “wishful” to think father-of-one Greer did not target other women. A source close to the investigation said: “It feels a bit like this could be Police Scotland’s Wayne Couzens moment.” Serving PC Couzens used handcuffs to stage the fake arrest of Sarah Everard, 33, as she walked home in Clapham, south London, alone during a Covid lockdown in March 2021. Most read in The Sun He then kidnapped, raped and murdered her. Greer’s first known victim was a woman whose home he visited with fellow officers after she reported a disturbance in 2012. The cops took a statement and left but Greer later returned alone and raped her. The net began closing in on the fiend months ago when his first victim courageously came forward. It sparked one of Police Scotland’s biggest ever anti-corruption probes. Assistant Chief Constable Lynn Ratcliff said: “This officer has clearly abused his power and revisited someone that he’s encountered in the course of his duties. “This victim was brave enough to speak to us. “That was the trigger point for us starting our investigation.” It was later discovered that in the weeks after the attack, Greer had monitored the woman’s file to check if she had reported him. Anti-corruption detectives later obtained a mobile number for Greer which he had failed to list in his personal records. They searched a database and found it was linked to a 2018 report from a Glasgow sex worker about an unnamed but violent customer. This gave detectives a crucial second line of inquiry and grounds to monitor every keystroke Greer made on police computers. They later discovered the brute had been searching the system for traces of a complaint from a number which detectives found belonged to a Glasgow prostitute. It was enough evidence to put before a sheriff who authorised a warrant to search Greer’s home and seize devices on April 24. The sicko was said to have appeared “shocked” when told he was suspected of rape. The officers seized seven mobile phones and a laptop and recovered thousands of videos and images. It is understood officers are not yet even halfway through the files but have already identified five prostitutes who were raped. Three other victims included two female officers of whom Greer took inappropriate photos while they were training. As the case progressed detectives took steps to ensure Greer’s family were not in danger. It led social work officers to visit his home accompanied by police on May 5. He took his own life the next day. Rank-and-file chiefs last night told of their shock amid fears more victims will come forward — as force insiders said the coward would also have faced attempted murder charges. David Kennedy, of the Scottish Police Federation, said: “We can only hope no more people come forward in the sense that it could mean there are no more victims. But I think that would be wishful thinking. It’s horrendous. “You are dealing with somebody who is clearly psychotic, or a narcissist, who is clearly very good at hiding it. “The circumstances are horrific for his family who seem to have no knowledge of anything.” Australian-born Greer was previously said to have had “unblemished service”. He had moved to the UK with family when he was six and joined the former Strathclyde Police in 2009. Assistant Chief Constable Ratcliff insisted comparisons with Couzens, 53 — who was handed a whole life sentence for the murder of marketing executive Sarah after tricking her into his car — were unhelpful. A damning report found force bosses had failed to vet Couzens properly and condemned inadequate investigations into indecent exposure offences he committed. An inquiry also unearthed allegations of a string of sex crimes carried out by Couzens including two rapes, a knifepoint attempted kidnap and a serious sex offence against a young girl. Asked about the Operation Submarine probe into Greer’s 14-year campaign, ACC Ratfliff said: “At this stage, we’ve got no evidence to suggest [missed red flags] is the case. But we keep that under review because we have to make sure that we capture and we take on board the lessons learned.” She said Police Scotland vetting was “markedly different” now compared to when Greer joined the force. And urging victims to come forward she added: “If there is anyone who believes that they may have been a victim of Alan Greer, we would urge them to have the courage and confidence to come forward and tell us about it. “They can be assured that we will listen, we will investigate, and we will do our best to make sure that they get the support that they need going forward.” Mr Kennedy added: “Thankfully he has been caught because who knows what else could have happened if he was still undetected. “What we have to learn is how do we, as a police service, make sure that individuals like this don’t get into the job in the first place. The police have been exceptional in what they have done to try to bring witnesses forward and to deal with the case in the way they have. “But maybe we have to look back and see if there are signs that gave a clue that would have stopped this individual before. “We have to make sure that anyone who feels that they are being targeted by an off-duty police officer in that manner feels that they have got the ability to come forward and report it.”
