Monsoon system that drenched Delhi to hit Rajasthan next with heavy rain

(Photo: Windy)The powerful monsoon system that unleashed torrential rain across Delhi-NCR on Friday is now moving westward and is expected to bring heavy rainfall to Rajasthan over the next 24 to 48 hours, even as thunderstorms continue to lash parts of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and northern Madhya Pradesh.Meteorologists said the intense rain over Delhi and adjoining regions was triggered by a well-marked low-pressure system (LPS) that has developed over western Uttar Pradesh.The system fuelled widespread thunderstorms across the National Capital Region, bringing much-needed relief from the humid conditions while causing waterlogging and traffic disruptions in several areas. As the low-pressure system gradually shifts westwards, it is expected to move towards north Rajasthan, carrying with it bands of moisture-laden clouds capable of producing intense spells of rain.Weather experts said the system will remain active for another 36 to 48 hours, sustaining thunderstorms and heavy rainfall over Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, eastern Rajasthan and northern parts of Madhya Pradesh. The rainfall is being further strengthened by the prevailing monsoon circulation over northern India. The monsoon trough, the primary rain-bearing axis of the southwest monsoon, currently stretches across northwest India before extending eastwards towards the Bay of Bengal, creating favourable conditions for the formation and intensification of rain-bearing clouds.The westward movement of the low-pressure system is expected to shift the focus of heavy rainfall from Delhi-NCR towards Rajasthan, where several districts could witness intense showers accompanied by thunderstorms, gusty winds and localised flooding.Delhi-NCR may continue to receive intermittent spells of rain through Friday as trailing cloud bands associated with the system pass over the region.
