Monsoon is leaving, but one final spell is stirring. Where will it rain?

India's southwest monsoon may be entering its final phase, but another weather system brewing over the Bay of Bengal is set to keep several parts of the country wet over the coming days.The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Saturday, September 19, that an upper-air cyclonic circulation over the north Andaman Sea and adjoining areas had persisted and could give rise to a low-pressure area by the evening.The system is then expected to travel west-northwestwards across the Bay of Bengal and gradually strengthen, bringing the possibility of heavy and very heavy rain to parts of eastern and central India. (Photo: IMD) WEATHER SYSTEM TO GROW STRONG AS IT MOVES EASTAccording to the IMD, the system is likely to intensify into a depression over the eastcentral Bay of Bengal on September 21 and further into a deep depression over the westcentral Bay of Bengal on September 22. It is then expected to continue moving west-northwestwards, reaching the westcentral and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal near the south Odisha-north Andhra Pradesh coasts around the morning of September 23.This movement could prove significant as the system is expected to draw moisture from the Bay of Bengal and feed rainfall across several states even as the southwest monsoon begins withdrawing from parts of northern India. (Photo: PTI) The IMD said the system is already associated with an east-west trough extending from the north Andaman Sea towards north Coastal Andhra Pradesh across the central Bay of Bengal.WHERE WILL IT RAIN?The rainfall could become particularly intense around September 22-24.Odisha is forecast to receive heavy to very heavy rain, with isolated extremely heavy rainfall possible on September 23 and 24.Coastal parts of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are also likely to see heavy to very heavy rainfall during this period. (Photo: IMD) Chhattisgarh and Vidarbha could also receive heavy rain, while Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Karnataka and parts of the Northeast are expected to remain affected by rainfall.The system is already producing weather over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, where the IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places on September 19.
