Monsoon beats El Nino fears: Delhi-NCR gets bumper rain, more on the way

Delhi-NCR has moved past its normal monsoon rainfall after a fresh spell of heavy showers. Active cloud bands across India suggest more rain ahead even if the monsoon weakens in some regions later this week. There are still around 36 days remaining in the official June-September monsoon period. (Photo: Windy)The southwest monsoon has delivered a strong performance over Delhi-NCR, easing fears that El Nio conditions could significantly weaken rainfall across northern India this season.Delhi's base observatory at Safdarjung recorded 99.1 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 8:30 am on Monday, pushing the city's seasonal rainfall total to 645.1 mm.The figure has now surpassed Delhi's normal seasonal rainfall of 640.4 mm for the June-September monsoon period, with more than a month still remaining in the season. The rainfall has not been limited to Safdarjung. Other observatories across Delhi have also recorded healthy monsoon totals. The Ridge has received 689.1 mm, followed by Ayanagar at 671.3 mm and Lodhi Road at 647.7 mm. Palam, however, remains comparatively lower with 527.6 mm of rainfall so far.The latest spell has significantly improved Delhi's seasonal rainfall numbers, with repeated showers helping the national capital overcome earlier concerns about an uneven monsoon. Satellite imagery from the INSAT-3DS weather satellite shows extensive cloud development across central, eastern and northern parts of India, indicating that monsoon activity remains active over several regions.A broad cloud mass stretching across the subcontinent is supporting fresh rainfall over parts of north and central India. While the monsoon is expected to weaken over some regions later this week, the season is far from over. There are still around 36 days remaining in the official June-September monsoon period, meaning every additional spell of rain could further strengthen seasonal rainfall totals.Over the next 48 hours, widespread moderate to heavy rainfall is likely over Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. These regions could see repeated spells as moisture and favourable atmospheric conditions continue to support monsoon activity.Moderate rainfall is also expected at isolated places across southeastern Rajasthan, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, eastern Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh and northern Telangana.Meanwhile, isolated light showers are likely over Kerala, Uttarakhand, coastal Karnataka, coastal Maharashtra, Goa and parts of northeastern India. For much of the remaining country, weather conditions are expected to remain largely dry, although isolated light showers cannot be ruled out.For Delhi-NCR, the recent bumper rainfall has already pushed the season beyond its average mark.Even if monsoon activity begins weakening later this week, further showers through September could make 2026 a stronger monsoon season for the national capital.- EndsPublished By: Sibu Kumar TripathiPublished On: Aug 25, 2026 17:41 IST
