Money the Greatest Challenge Facing Serbia’s Small, Independent Media

For Serbia’s small independent newsrooms, pressure comes not only in the form of intimidation, spurious lawsuits, or physical assault. Increasingly, it is financial. The Serbian media landscape is sharply divided between outlets close to the ruling Serbian Progressive Party, SNS, and independent newsrooms. Research has found that media loyal to the ruling party are the primary beneficiaries of co-financing and advertising from public bodies. Independent media are starved of such funds. This helps explain why pro-government outlets can operate without the same financial pressures, while independent newsrooms struggle to cover basic overheads and remain vulnerable to political and economic pressure.
