Moment 'blind' driver ploughs into cyclist after 'forgetting' to wear his glasses in sickening crash - before avoiding prison sentence

CCTV footage shows Uchenna Agunenye, 48, behind the wheel of his silver Citroën C4 before smashing into a cyclist. The woman, who was in a cycle lane, was thrown off her bike and launched into a nearby metal railing, causing her to break multiple bones. Despite driving into the cyclist, the video shows the car continuing to drive down the road after the initial contact.Officers patrolling the area on Holderness Road in Hull, and members of the public, can be seen running over to the woman after the sickening crash. The woman was subsequently taken to hospital for treatment for a broken leg, heel and several toes, a court was told. She also suffered lacerations and a fracture to her elbow and was left requiring surgery. Agunenye was handed a suspended sentence for the reckless driving. However, a roadside eyesight test was conducted and the driver failed. Further lines of enquiry were conducted at the scene and it was identified that the conditions of his driving licence were to ensure he wore glasses and he was arrested.At interview, he admitted to forgetting to wear his glasses – causing him to collide with the cyclist, a Crown Court heard. Agunenye, of Jalland Street, Hull, avoided jail and was sentenced to a 14-month suspended sentence. Appearing at Hull Crown Court, he was sentenced for causing serious injury by dangerous driving following a collision.He was also disqualified from driving for two years, disqualified until he has passed an extended test, ordered to conduct 180 hours of unpaid work and pay the cyclist £187. PS Matt Tuton from the Roads Policing Unit said: 'The actions of Agunenye that day were careless and reckless and whilst the cyclist is lucky to be alive, the physical and psychological impact this collision will continue to have on her for the rest of her life is unimaginable.
