Despite earlier reports that Season 3 was already in development, Paramount+ Head of Originals Jane Wiseman recently confirmed that the streamer has not yet made a decision on another renewal. For now, all eyes are on Season 2 — and on Harry (Tom Hardy), one of the show's most fascinating and deliberately difficult-to-read characters. Through his actions in Season 1, we learned that Harry is fair, brutal, and cunning, but one particular line gave us perhaps the clearest insight into how he really thinks and feels. In Season 1's sixth episode, "Antwerp Blues," war begins after Conrad (Pierce Brosnan) ordered the assassination of Richie Stevenson's (Geoff Bell) wife, Vron (Annie Cooper), in the previous episode, "Funeral For a Friend," and Brendan (Daniel Betts) and Seraphina (Mandeep Dhillon) are the only Harrigans who don't retreat to the Cotswolds. With the pair exposed in Antwerp and unaware of the war, Harry must fly there, and as he gets in the helicopter, Conrad asks if he is ready for war, to which Harry replies, "It's all war, Conrad." It may be small, but this dialogue reveals a lot about how Harry's mind works, why he is so useful, and why those three words remain one of the best summaries of his character heading into Season 2. Harry's Line Reveals His Chaotic Mental State in 'MobLand' Image via Paramount+ While actions are typically the way to see how a character really feels, this dialogue tells us all we need to know about Harry's inner thoughts. Any peace of mind he may have had is gone, and he exists in a constant state of kill or be killed. This internal conflict is likely why he is so shut off toward Jan (Joanne Froggatt) and Gina (Teddie Allen). We haven't seen him truly loving and present with either woman this season, which brings us back to the question of when Jan will finally leave him, as Gina even seems to be thinking about this episode. Even for Harry, though he would never admit it, it would arguably be better for him, too, if she did leave him, as he clearly struggles to keep everything balanced in his mind. Simply put, Harry may be protective, but more like a general defending his soldiers rather than as a father and husband. When he pulls Gina out of her GCSE Psychology exam, he doesn't comfort her or apologize, but orders her because, to him, "It's all war," and this is what they need to do to survive, even his daughter. We can assume her anger does hurt him, because he never stops being gentle with her or yells, but Harry still fails to drop his perception of a man at war, so it feels unlikely their relationship will heal anytime soon. Harry's Mindset Is What Makes Him So Dangerous in 'MobLand's Criminal Underworld Image via Paramount In terms of the way Eddie (Anson Boon) and Maeve (Helen Mirren) have treated and spoken about Harry, he is underestimated as to how great a threat he is. Even Conrad likely sees him as only a lapdog who will do as he is told, as Harry keeps his eyes glued to the floor during the confrontation between Conrad and Kevin (Paddy Considine). However, this tiny piece of dialogue shows why the Harrigans and everyone else should still fear Harry. He is always thinking ahead in strategic terms, which places a distinction between him and the aforementioned members of the Harrigans, such as Eddie, Conrad, and Maeve, who are more impulsive. Some may think that Harry would never betray the Harrigans, and they wouldn't be wrong in most circumstances. However, with Maeve worming her way into Conrad's ear about the existence of a rat in the family and pointing the finger at Harry, he could be forced to, and the Harrigans should be careful. If everything is war with Harry, then he would know who the threats to him are, arguably before they know it, and considering how this line seemed like exactly what Conrad needed to hear at that moment, maybe he already suspected their current doubts. The Perfect Line at the Perfect Time for Harry in 'MobLand' It may not have seemed like it, but this was arguably one of the most high-pressure moments for Harry in Season 1 of MobLand. Yes, he had to tell elaborate lies to Richie about the death of Tommy (Felix Edwards) and how it was Valjon (Peter Ferdinando), not Eddie, who killed him. However, at that moment, only Harry's life was on the line. With Gina and Jan in the Cotswolds, under Conrad's roof, Harry needed to reassure the mob boss not just to protect himself, but those he loves most, too. It may not matter, as we saw Conrad creeping on Gina later anyway, but Harry wasn't to know at that moment. Furthermore, as we saw throughout the episode, Conrad will go to extreme lengths to punish those who speak to him in a way he disapproves of. Yet, despite the subtext, the time-sensitive situation with Brendan and Seraphina, and the overwhelming noise of the helicopter, what Harry said was the best thing possible, and it shows his calm mind when the stakes are high. Kevin had already disappointed his father and almost came to blows over his frustration, but Harry is not only accepting of war, but also shows that it makes no difference to him. For someone as bloodthirsty as Conrad, that must be music to the ears, as he knows he doesn't have to worry about Harry's commitment. Harry proved to be a thoroughly intense character throughout Season 1, but this moment goes a long way toward showing why he is so self-isolating, driven, and ultimately tragic. Even more importantly, "It's all war" is a line we can carry into Season 2 as a measure of how — or if — Harry changes as the Harrigans' brutal story continues.
