He had hoped to inspire a similar victory over Hungarian club Ferencvaros in Europa League qualifying play-off last night with his side 1-0 down from the first leg at home in Papara Park. However, Salah ended up being hooked just after the hour as Trabzonspor fell to a heavy 4-0 defeat with only NINE men left on the field of play at full time, making it 5-0 on aggregate over the two legs. And following that humiliating loss, manager Fatih Tekke tendered his resignation from the club. Tekke, 47, told beIN Sports immediately after the game: “We had a very sad night. “Of course, the reason is my team and me. We had a sad night for both our country and our club. “As of now, I am resigning from my 18-month tenure. I feel I have the right to impose this punishment on myself.” He added: “I’m resigning from a very honourable position. Today’s loss is unacceptable. I can’t even sleep like this. “May everyone forgive me. We did our best. “There are some games that really hurt you. We just went through one of those games.” Despite Tekke’s declaration, the Trabzonspor board said in a statement they did not accept his resignation as it was done in the heat of the moment. A club statement said: “Our head coach, Fatih Tekke, has decided to resign due to the intense emotional impact of the defeat against Ferencvaros. “The Trabzonspor Board of Directors has not accepted the resignation of our Head Coach, Fatih Tekke. “Fatih Tekke continues in his role as Head Coach and will be in charge of our team for the upcoming league match against Amedspor. This is respectfully announced to the public.” Trabzonspor, who also have Manchester United flop Andre Onana on their books, are unbeaten in the Turkish Super Lig from their opening two games and will compete in the Conference League this season.
