On Oct. 28 (the anniversary of his passing), Netflix released a documentary about the “Friends” star titled “The One About Matthew Perry.” The three-part mini-series chronicles his early rise to fame on the NBC sitcom, struggles with addiction and eventual death last fall. The docuseries episodes are sprinkled with never-before-seen footage from his family, as well as interviews with his sister Mia Perry Bowick, father John Bennett Perry, friends and former colleagues Warren Littlefield and Jeff Strauss. One of the biggest bombshells was that in 2018, when Perry nearly died after being comatose due to opioid use, his sister was granted power of attorney, just a few weeks after she herself had given birth in the same place he was hospitalized. However, the docuseries reveals that the actor was intent on improving his well-being and spent approximately $7 million to try to get sober. If you’re hungry for more background on Perry post-documentary, why not hear it straight from the source? Before his passing, in June 2024, he penned a memoir about the broken family that raised him, early desires for fame and why he was happy to get sober. The star got vulnerable about his struggles with sobriety and offered advice to those also struggling. “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing: A Memoir” Amazon In honor of the one-year anniversary of Perry’s death, “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing: A Memoir” is currently nearly 50% off at Amazon. It’s the No. 1 best-seller in television comedy books — and a must-read for fans of the star. Although the book gives an emotionally raw look at addiction, it’s also inspiring and you’ll enjoy hearing stories from Perry about his “Friends” castmates and the exciting times they shared.
