Former Miss North Carolina USA Brittany Boltinhouse was dethroned in 2026 after old social media posts containing racial slurs and controversial political content resurfaced online.Brittany is now suing the Miss USA organization for defamation, claiming their public statements “falsely portrayed” her as racist, homophobic, and transphobic, damaging her reputation and career. Her attorney argues she was unfairly “branded with a scarlet letter” by pageant officials.Just when you thought the Miss North Carolina USA scandal couldn’t get any messier, a new development has already come to light. After being stripped of her title for her “conduct over an extended period of time,” Brittany Boltinhouse is suing the Miss USA pageant organization (and other parties) for defamation.According to court docs obtained by People, she’s suing over statements Miss USA made after she was dethroned, which she claims “falsely portrayed her as racist, homophobic, transphobic and bigoted and could damage her reputation.”Brittany was originally crowned the winner in June 2026, only to be dethroned once her social media posts containing racial slurs resurfaced. She acknowledged the posts in her legal complaint, including more recent activity supporting President Donald Trump, Charlie Kirk, and Tristan and Andrew Tate, as well as posts speaking out against Joe Biden’s Transgender Day of Visibility proclamation.Earlier this month, Miss USA chairman and CEO Thom Brodeur announced she was stripped of the title in a statement, writing that the org “does not tolerate racism, homophobia, transphobia nor language that strips any person of their dignity.”He added that Brittany would release a statement apologizing for her actions at the time, but her legal complaint alleges that his public statement gave the impression she had approved an apology statement from pageant officials that “portrayed her as bigoted.”Add Cosmopolitan as a preferred source in your Google search results.Use your Google account to add this to your settings.Brittany is asking for monetary compensation for the “damage to her reputation, emotional distress, and lost professional and economic opportunities” that reportedly exceed $25,000. Per the court docs, the former pageant queen adds that her compensation should include “the value of losing the Miss North Carolina title, the chance to compete at Miss USA, and potential sponsorships, endorsements, appearances, and future career opportunities” along with her request for punitive damages, attorneys’ fees, costs, and interest. In the wake of her case, one of her attorneys, Patrick M. Mincey, said in a statement to People, “Brittany Boltinhouse was not merely stripped of a title. She was publicly branded with a scarlet letter, accused of some of the most despicable accusations that can be lodged against another person in modern society.”While speaking to the Carolina Journal on August 7, Boltinhouse said, in part, “I’m not allowed to speak about things, but as of today, I believe and think I was stripped from my title because of my political stance and my belief system as a conservative Christian woman. I will say every teenager has made a mistake. Every person here has made a mistake, but I'm not really here to talk about that. I'm here to talk about the woman I am today. Things may happen decades ago, but I am here to talk about the hard-working woman, the woman who was standing there as Miss North Carolina USA. I won fair and square.”The exact amount has yet to be determined, as a jury will decide how much she could be awarded in damages.
