Minneapolis apartment shooting leaves two dead, three officers injured

A shooting at a downtown Minneapolis apartment building left two people dead and three officers injured. Three Minneapolis police officers were injured in the incident, including two who suffered gunshot wounds. Hennepin County Medical Center said all three officers were in stable condition.Police said a 911 call reporting gunfire came in shortly after 4.30 pm. Officers entered the high-rise three minutes later, found victims inside and then heard more gunshots. They followed the sound to a higher floor, where they encountered "a haze that significantly limited their visibility", police Sgt Garrett Parten said at a press conference on Wednesday evening.Parten said one victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while another died after being taken to hospital. He said it was not immediately clear how the shooter died. Hennepin County Medical Center said it received seven patients, but did not share further details about the condition of the others who were wounded."This is a tremendously tragic event and our thoughts and prayers are with the families, the loved ones of those who lost their lives, those who were injured and with the injured officers and their families," Parten said. Julius Bailey, who was sitting outside his apartment building, said he heard gunshots and saw a man he recognised as a resident of the building holding a pistol. He said he heard a woman screaming and immediately ran away, adding that he counted eight shots. Bailey said he knew the man because he was known for showing off his weapon, and said he had tried to avoid him since moving into the building in June. "I could tell he was trouble," he said.Another resident, Chris Miller, said he heard a rapid burst of gunfire and ran outside for safety. He said he believed he knew who carried out the shooting and that earlier this week he had come across someone in the hallway with a handgun and reported that person to management. Video posted on social media showed police aiming rifles upwards at an apartment tower near the Minneapolis Convention Center, while officials asked residents to avoid the nearby Loring Park neighbourhood. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said in a social media post that state officials were on the ground to help local law enforcement respond to the shooting. "Grateful to law enforcement actively working to ensure the safety of our neighbours in Downtown Minneapolis this afternoon," Walz said. "Minnesota is praying for our first responders." FBI Director Kash Patel also said on X that the agency was responding and "will offer any and all resources necessary to assist local authorities".
