The case has been registered under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, which deals with culpable homicide not amounting to murder.According to the FIR, the incident took place between 1.30 am and 2 am on October 11, when a Mini Cooper bearing registration number KL 07 CR 1001 was allegedly being driven at high speed and in a rash and negligent manner, endangering human life. The impact threw the three people travelling on a two-wheeler onto the road, causing serious injuries to their heads and bodies, the FIR states. The crash claimed the lives of Devika, Gopika and Iyas, all around 21 years old. The deaths have triggered widespread outrage in Keralam, with the victims' families demanding stringent action against those responsible. TWO MORE PERSONS TAKEN INTO CUSTODYPolice arrested two more persons, identified as Ameer and Joel, in connection with the crash on Monday. They were allegedly travelling in the Mini Cooper with the driver, Suhail, and his friend Ninav before the accident.According to police, Ameer and Joel fled the scene in another vehicle after the crash. They were later taken into custody in Alappuzha with the assistance of local police. Suhail, a Kochi native who was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol, was arrested soon after the accident. Ninav was also taken into custody on Sunday.Police have named Suhail as the first accused in the case, while Ninav, Ameer and Joel have been accused of abetting the offence.Investigators found that Suhail and Ninav had consumed alcohol at bars in Kochi and Nedumbassery before Ameer and Joel joined them. The four allegedly continued drinking before setting off in the Mini Cooper, police said.Ameer and Joel had reportedly reached Nedumbassery to pick up a friend arriving at the airport. When the flight was delayed, they joined Suhail for a high-speed drive, according to the police investigation.CAR WAS TRAVELLING AT OVER 120 KM PER HOURDuring evidence collection at the accident site on Monday, Ameer and Joel reportedly told investigators that the Mini Cooper was travelling at more than 120 km per hour when it crashed into the two-wheeler. The car was on the right side of the road at the time, officials said.Police also found videos purportedly showing Suhail driving at speeds exceeding 200 km per hour on several occasions. Investigators said Suhail's mother had gifted him the luxury car for his birthday when he was 19.The arrested accused were produced before a court and remanded to the Borstal School in Thrikkakara, where remand prisoners aged between 18 and 21 are lodged. Police are expected to move a petition seeking Suhail's custody for further investigation.BARS UNDER EXCISE DEPARTMENT SCANNERThe Excise Department has registered cases against three bars in Vyttila, Palarivattom and Nedumbassery for allegedly serving liquor to Suhail and Ninav. The action followed directions from Minister M Liju. Excise officials said the establishments had allegedly violated rules prohibiting the sale of liquor to persons below 23 years of age.The department will investigate the alleged violations and decide on further action, including the possible cancellation of the bars' licences, officials said.VICTIM'S FAMILY DEMANDS MURDER CHARGEDevika's family has demanded that the police invoke murder charges against the accused, arguing that the alleged reckless driving warrants stricter action than a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder."A case has been registered for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Instead, a murder case should be registered because he drove the vehicle in such a reckless manner. Such an incident should not happen to anyone in the future," Devika's uncle, Sandeep, told reporters. He expressed hope that the government and police would ensure a fair investigation. "We believe the government and police will handle the case fairly. We hope the government and police will help us," he said.- Ends
