Minecraft Officially Returns October 2026 With Brand-New Release

Even though it has millions of mods at this point, including paid and free content, you could feasibly play the base game casually for your entire life. There's a ton of depth already present without spending anything beyond the initial entry fee, and official updates are arriving constantly. This is on top of spinoffs and new releases for Minecraft, as we wait for the eventual Minecraft 2 to launch. It could be years, or even decades, but for now, there's something on the horizon. Thanks to a new official update from Mojang, we have an idea of what the next major release of Minecraft will be. This one has been a long time coming, and fans have been expecting it for at least a year now. Minecraft Will Return October 2026 When October 27 arrives, Minecraft will launch on Nintendo Switch 2 after a lengthy wait. The Switch 2 edition will sport the "Vibrant Visuals" aesthetic, an upgraded visual sheen for Minecraft powered by more modern hardware. Enhanced lighting and shadows are at the forefront of the update, but nearly every visual element is also impacted. There's another update on the way too, but this one is a bit more unconventional: "The much-loved Super Mario Mash-Up pack is also getting an update, to get the most out of those Vibrant Visuals graphics. As a reminder, the Super Mario Mash-Up pack is exclusive to the Nintendo versions of Minecraft, bringing with it a custom Mario-themed world, music, and unique skins. Explore iconic locations like Peach’s castle and Delfino Plaza within Minecraft. Worlds collide." Weirdly, Mojang is being coy about the entire process at the moment. If you already own Minecraft on Switch, a "digital upgrade path" will be introduced in the future, with "more details to follow." It stands to reason that if the upgrade was free, they would just say so outright. In all likelihood, the team is still figuring out what the ideal "just right" price is for the upgrade. Is Minecraft Worth Your Time In 2026? Although the frequency (and quality) of official updates waxes and wanes in any given year, Minecraft has built a strong foundation since launch. It's absolutely worth revisiting in 2026, again, even if you're just experiencing the base game and none of the extra content. Minecraft will only get better from here as more quality-of-life changes and content are added, including new block types, creatures, and even major game mechanics. Come October, you can also enjoy it better on a new platform.
