You can reach them at James.t@thegamer.com Lurking in the Deep Dark, subterranean Ancient Cities of Minecraft are the Wardens, blind hunters who stalk players based on sound and vibration. There have been countless theories over the years about their origin, from corrupted Iron Golems to a failed Evoker experiment, but Minecraft Dungeons 2 just handed us the answer. X user Harri dug through the files and discovered that the Singer mob, inhabiting the new Sift dimension, is also called a "Healthy Warden." That has far more tragic implications than any fan theory. The Singer is a passive mob that communicates entirely through song, using its music to calm others, while the Warden reacts violently to sound and even attacks through a sonic blast. If the Singer is what a healthy Warden looks like, then the creature we know today has had its very nature twisted from one that used song to soothe others into one that uses sound to hunt and kill. Of course, it should be said that file names aren't strictly 'canon,' so Mojang may have changed its mind on this concept during development. As Silverx put it, "Imagine getting corrupted in the Overworld where the very thing you're known for hurts so much you have to attack it. You can't even see either, so you're forced to listen to painfully exaggerated noise." What This Means For Wardens If the sculk's corruption has stripped the Wardens of their ability to sing, they may have also lost the ability to open the Deep Dark portal and return home, as the Singers do with their songs. We can't ignore the visual differences either, as the corruption has warped the Singer's elongated body and stripped away its flesh, leaving an exposed rib cage from which it fires its sonic blast. Interestingly, the Singer also resembles the old Warden concept art, known as the "Stalker." Its body wasn't quite as bulky, but it did feature a longer, statuesque neck. Though that's not the only new Warden lore that Minecraft Dungeons 2 introduces, as there's also a new mob called the Twisted Warden, found guarding the Deep Dark portal. These are Wardens who have been "affected by souls," making them "much bigger and much worse," suggesting that the corruption doesn't simply transform Singers into monsters, but can continue to twist them further away from their original form. I'm holding up a blaring crimson-red sign with the word "SPECULATION" emblazoned on it for this next part, but considering that sculk feed on the souls of dead mobs to convert nearby blocks into more sculk, creating a living ecosystem that thrives on death — and that souls can apparently corrupt Wardens even further — I'd like to put forward my own theory: Wardens are dead Singers who have been corrupted by sculk. In fact, the sculk we find in the Overworld might even be rotting itself, as the pink (or apparently 'orange') colored blocks in the Sift are called "healthy sculk". Though another theory some fans have put forward is that sculk and Sift mobs who enter the Overworld are corrupted simply by being there. Whatever the answer, it's far more tragic than a rogue Iron Golem or an experiment gone wrong.
