As the old team gets together again, they are already facing down dangerous new threats, including arguably the freakiest foe in franchise history. The new Mighty Morphin series finds the OG team reuniting a decade after their last mission together. That's right, they're not "teenagers with attitude" anymore, the returning Rangers are young adults with the familiar problems of 20-somethings. Something perfectly explored by the side quest Power Rangers just sent Trini and Kimberly on: the quest for the "perfect rental home." Except, of course, by the end of the story it becomes about more than that. A monster gets thrown into the mix. The "Parastructionsite." The name is a mouthful, but the creature's design, plus its role as an antagonist and an obstacle for the Pink and Yellow Rangers to overcome, immediately make it a formidable addition to the franchise. The Power Rangers' Latest Terrifying Enemy Is Perfect For The Franchise's New Era Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #3, By Marguerite Bennett And Phillip Sevy "This dream home...is a nightmare." That's the tagline for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #3, a Trini + Kimberly spotlight issue, which puts their friendship and their desire to live together to the test. The nightmare winds up being the Parastructionsite, a massive, ravenous beetle-like entity with vicious looking pincers flanking a drooling mouth full of jagged teeth. Its eyes are blood-red, and it has an armored carapace with an entire housing development on its back. As its name suggests, the new Mighty Morphin Power Rangers monster is a parasitic organism. It's also a poltergeist-type entity. And it's also a hyperbolic extension of the idea of moving into the perfect new home, only to find it is infested with the gnarliest bugs you've ever seen. Which is precisely what makes it a perfect villain for the adult Rangers in this issue. The original Power Rangers show was a coming-of-age story, and it is in that sense that the franchise's latest comic book reboot goes back to its roots, while still seeking to move the narrative ball forward for Rangers' most beloved characters. And Parastructionsite, as an enemy, is a savvy look into how Mighty Morphin will have its characters tackling "the insurmountable responsibilities of modern life" out of costume, while also battling aliens and monsters on the regular. "Mighty Morphin" Pits The "Parastructionsite" Vs. The Yellow And Pink Rangers "Distract yourself by being mad at your friends!!!" the Parastructionsite screams when it is confronted by Kimberly in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #3. It is a monster that feeds on the psychic stress of contemporary adulthood, and it panics when its victims catch on. Notably, though, once the Parastructionsite is forced into a physical fight with the Rangers, it shows that it can hold its own. The towering entity requires the combined efforts of Trini and Kimberly's Zords to take down. So, while the monster works on a metaphorical level, it is also a legitimate threat that requires a large-scale action scene to deal with. That's another encouraging sign for Power Rangers readers. This new series seems determined to deliver everything the recent Power Rangers Prime series didn't. In Prime, the rebooted team were only just starting to get their Zords when the series wrapped up; Mighty Morphin isn't interested in slow-rolling classic elements like that. No, because its characters are veteran Rangers. The series' early focus has them reacclimating to suiting up, while facing a slate of new challenges in their personal lives. When it is time for the Rangers to morph, they don't hesitate. There might be rust to shake off, but when it comes to being Power Rangers there isn't a steep learning curve. Outside the battlefield, that's a different story, as the characters navigate adulthood. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers has so far struck an effective balance between these modes, while introducing novel new elements to the franchise, like the Parastructionsite.
