Only ~4% affected, but heavy users must buy extra hours via the Xbox Store; pricing and regional rules unknown. Limits aim to curb PC hogging as cloud demand rises, risking loss to rivals like GeForce Now. A year ago, we saw the Xbox Cloud Gaming service roll out to all tiers of the Xbox Game Pass. The Ultimate tier had access to it for years prior, so it was a nice surprise. Now, Microsoft is bringing another surprise, although it's not a nice one. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers can only play on the Cloud Gaming service for 15 hours a month, and that's the high end of the limitation. Xbox Game Pass gets a new monthly limit, and it doesn't look pretty Xbox Game Pass Essential subscribers are especially down on their luck Xbox On the Xbox News website, Microsoft has announced new changes to its Cloud Gaming service. If you're an avid user of it, you only have a few months of use until these pretty nasty time restrictions are placed on your account: Beginning in November, we’re changing how cloud gaming is included with XBOX Game Pass. Game Pass plans will include a set number of cloud gaming hours each month: Game Pass Ultimate: 15 hours Game Pass Premium: 10 hours Game Pass Essential: 5 hours Today, eligible Game Pass subscribers can stream without these monthly hour limits. Microsoft says that this change should only affect "4% of Game Pass subscribers," but it's still a pretty huge impact for that 4%, even for the highest-paying tier. So, what happens when you run out of hours? Well, Microsoft states that you can buy more time via the Xbox Store. The company wasn't ready to reveal how much people will need to pay per hour, or if people on the higher tiers will get a discount, but it did say that "Available hours, purchasing options, and cloud gaming features" will vary by region. Microsoft claims it's making this move due to people using the Cloud Gaming service more often and for longer than ever before. As such, Microsoft wants to put these restrictions in place to stop people hogging the PCs. It runs the risk of losing business to its cloud gaming competitors, especially given how Nvidia GeForce Now brought "PC-quality" game performance to Amazon Fire TV Sticks.
