Satya Nadella has criticised Anthropic's Claude Fable, saying the AI refuses too many requests and is overly restrictive. The criticism comes as Microsoft doubles down on cheaper AI models and questions the industry's dependence on a handful of frontier AI companies.Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella says Anthropic's latest AI model is too restrictive and "doesn't make sense". (Photo: Reuters)Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella is not a fan of Anthropic's latest AI model, Claude Fable. He believes the model is too restrictive and refuses too many user requests, raising questions over whether such heavy safeguards make sense for an AI built to help people create and work. According to CNBC, Nadella made the remarks on Wednesday during an internal meeting with engineers working on Microsoft's Copilot AI software. While discussing Anthropic's newest model, Nadella suggested that Claude Fable's frequent refusals were limiting its usefulness. "If you use Fable, when it refuses for any random thing, it is just like, when was the last time you had a creation tool that was so editorially controlled? It does not make sense," Nadella said, according to a transcript of the meeting cited by the publication.Anthropic introduced Claude Fable as one of its most capable AI models, but it also comes with stricter safety measures than previous versions. According to the company's support documentation, Fable can automatically switch users to an older Claude model if it detects requests related to sensitive topics such as offensive cybersecurity, biology, chemistry, AI model distillation or certain frontier AI development tasks. Anthropic says these safeguards are designed to reduce misuse while complying with government regulations. The restrictions, however, have sparked criticism from some users. Several posts on X have claimed that Claude Fable redirected even seemingly harmless prompts to an older model, including deeper questions about cancer research and other technical topics. Anthropic has also acknowledged that it is working to reduce false positives, saying it wants to prevent unnecessary refusals while maintaining strong safety protections. “Building these safeguards is a complex technical challenge: users may experience more false positives as we refine these classifiers to respond to new threats. We are working to reduce these as fast as possible,” the company said in a statement earlier. Nadella's remarks also come as Microsoft is looking to bring down the cost of AI by investing more in its own models and giving customers a wider choice of AI systems. Rather than relying on a handful of expensive frontier models, the company has been expanding Azure AI Foundry, which offers access to thousands of AI models from providers including OpenAI, Anthropic and Microsoft's own in-house portfolio. Microsoft has also been developing smaller, more efficient models that businesses can customise using their own data. The company has also taken a cautious approach to Anthropic's latest model. Earlier this year, Microsoft reportedly restricted employees from using Claude Fable internally because of concerns over the model's data retention policy, which allows Anthropic to retain user prompts for a limited period for safety monitoring.During the meeting, Nadella also reportedly reinforced that strategy, arguing that businesses should not have to depend on just a handful of AI providers. "It cannot be that there are only two companies in the world with token capital, and everybody else is renting it. It makes no economic sense," he said, referring to the computing resources required to run advanced AI models.- EndsPublished By: Divya BhatiPublished On: Jul 17, 2026 12:26 IST
