Their first film together was Clean and Sober, which came out in 1988 and tells the story of Keaton's realtor character, Daryl Poynter, as his life is spiraling out of control. He's embezzled thousands of dollars from his employer and partakes in illegal substances with a woman who ends up overdosing. Daryl enters rehab to get away from his troubles and meets Craig, a counselor played by Freeman. Now the two actors are about to reunite after 38 years. Deadline reports that the film studio Angel has acquired the rights to distribute Rode to Ruin, a Western that not only stars Keaton but is also being directed by the award-winning actor as well. His co-star is Freeman; no other cast members have been revealed at this time, but the film is expected to be released sometime in 2027. R. Dean McCreery is on board as the screenwriter, with Keaton, Lori McCreary, Kelly Mendelsohn and Gary Lucchesi serving as producers. Rode to Ruin is a Western thriller that will center on a former U.S. Marshal who has spent the last 40 years searching for the person responsible for his wife's murder. Along the way, he crosses paths with an elderly outlaw whose memory is slowly slipping away. After they meet, a shocking revelation surfaces that may prove fatal for both men. David Fischer, Angel's Vice President of Acquisitions and Business Affairs, said in a statement that Rode to Ruin is an "exceptional, character-driven story" that's being "told with integrity and a genuine sense of purpose."
