For the first time in their professional lives, Titus Welliver and Cameron Monaghan, the two lead Bosch actors, are working together, and their collaborative Michael Connelly project releases today. The Bosch franchise has undergone many difficult changes lately, both on screen and in the writing. The Prime Video Bosch TV shows ended in 2025, and Renee Ballard is the new lead, with Bosch playing a supporting role. Additionally, Titus Welliver continues to play the titular character on Prime, but Cameron Monaghan will take charge of the MGM+ branch of the series, playing Harry Bosch as a young officer in Bosch: Start of Watch. It's not necessarily bad, just a little sad to see Welliver not at the forefront. In the literary world, Bosch has changed in many ways. He has undergone cancer treatment and is mostly retired, occasionally volunteering his time. He’s not getting any younger. Now, The Hollow adds another layer of change. Until now, Connelly’s most popular book series has never featured multiple timelines and perspectives told by the same character. Two primary timelines and a third secondary timeline will alternate. This will make The Hollow a standout, much like the only first-person Bosch book, Lost Light. The Michael Connelly book is also a big departure from the norm for audiobooks in the Bosch series. Actor Titus Welliver started narrating the Bosch books in 2014 with The Burning Room. Since then, he has added ten more Michael Connelly books, including Bosch novels, The Lincoln Lawyer books featuring the character, and entries in Bosch and Ballard. Plus, he voiced a short story titled “Blue on Black.” The only times others have voiced the character are re-releases of pre-2014 books and short story collections. He has voiced Harry Bosch in all the main books. Now, Michael Connelly has officially brought the two Bosch actors, Titus Welliver and Cameron Monaghan, together professionally for the very first time for the audiobook of The Hollow. Titus Welliver & Cameron Monaghan Voice Bosch At Different Ages In The Hollow Titus Welliver and Cameron Monaghan obviously represent two parts of the Bosch onscreen franchise, the older and the younger. While Welliver wants to return as Bosch in a movie or another series, he also endorses Monaghan’s Bosch: Start of Watch. Meanwhile, Welliver revealed when speaking to ScreenRant about the prequel that Monaghan wrote him a gracious, heartfelt letter acknowledging the responsibility of taking over the role. Given their respect for each other, it’s fitting that they collaborate on a project. Moreover, it feels like Michael Connelly and Titus Welliver are welcoming Monaghan into a beloved tradition by having him join The Hollow’s audiobook. Aside from that, Monaghan serves a narrative purpose in The Hollow. The two main timelines in the story are Bosch as a teenager at the abusive MacLaren Children’s Center and him as an adult reinvestigating the covered-up murder of his friend. A third timeline ties these events to his early career in the police force. As much as I love Titus Welliver, it would feel strange for him to be narrating teenage and young adult Bosch. His narration of Bosch has always sounded hardened and gruff, like he’s taken a beating from the world. Yes, young Bosch has a hard life, but he hasn’t gone through everything that turns him into the detective we know today. What’s more, Cameron Monaghan’s involvement only feels right since Connelly’s work on Bosch: Start of Watch was a driving factor in him writing The Hollow. He told The Spokesman-Review, “[The writers] said, ‘we want to do some flashbacks to Harry and his relationship with another kid at MacLaren,’ and I was thinking, ‘Why haven’t I done that?’” Purchase The Hollow ebook here and the audiobook here. Welliver & Monaghan's Bosch Collaboration Will Be Limited To Audiobooks While it’s exciting to have Titus Welliver and Cameron Monaghan voice the same character in the same project, fans shouldn’t get too excited. In the interview with ScreenRant referenced above, Welliver confirmed he’s not involved in Bosch: Start of Watch in any way. He won’t serve as a producer or appear onscreen. The actor said, “We're not going to have any flash-forwards, or any older Harry. It's very much a standalone show...it's in the best of hands. I'm as excited as everyone else's and am rooting for everyone involved.” If Prime Video ever brings Welliver’s Harry Bosch back as a lead, they could potentially include flashback scenes to Bosch as a young officer. However, that’s multiple leaps and bounds away, and there’s no guarantee they’d write a role for Monaghan’s version of Bosch. That said, there’s still hope that Welliver and Monaghan could work together again in audiobooks. In the interview with The Spokesman-Review, Connelly said he really enjoyed writing Harry Bosch as the lead character again, not a side character in someone else’s story. So readers can expect more Bosch books after The Hollow, which hopefully will bring the two actors together for another audiobook.
