Michael Carrick sack news LIVE: Man Utd boss back on the brink after Chelsea defeat

Michael Carrick appears to be quickly back on the brink at Manchester United following Saturday’s 2-0 defeat by Chelsea in the Premier League. The Red Devils actually produced a much-improved first-half display in the high-profile lunchtime kick-off at Stamford Bridge, unlucky not to go in at the break with a lead after Matheus Cunha’s close-range header was ruled out for a fractional offside. But it was an all-too-familiar story after the break for crisis-stricken Man Utd, who imploded from a position of relative strength as Morgan Rogers broke the deadlock with a superb opening goal. Things quickly went from bad to worse from there, with Lisandro Martinez - who took aim at the club’s hierarchy in an explosive post-match rant earlier this month - giving away a penalty and sent off for a needless foul on Wesley Fofana.Cole Palmer stepped up to dispatch the spot-kick, with United’s 10 men then lucky not to ship further punishment as Estevao saw two goals ruled out and Senne Lammens made a string of fine saves. An initially brighter performance may well hand Carrick another stay of execution ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League visit from Roma as fans continued to show him support and aim their ire elsewhere, though a dismal nine-game winless run could surely force the club’s hand amid a nightmare fixture run.
