Metastatic breast cancer awareness day 2026: All you need to know

Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day, observed every year on October 13, highlights the realities of Stage 4 breast cancer. It calls for better treatment, stronger research funding, and greater support for people living with the disease.Metastatic breast cancer awareness day 2026: All you need to knowNew Delhi,Oct 13, 2026 14:27 ISTMetastatic breast cancer is the most advanced form of breast cancer. It develops when cancer cells spread beyond the breast to other organs such as the bones, lungs, liver, or brain. It is also called Stage 4 breast cancer. Unlike early-stage breast cancer, it usually cannot be completely cured, but treatment can control the disease, reduce symptoms, and improve quality of life for months or years.Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day is observed on October 13 during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The day was formally recognised in the United States in 2009 through Congressional resolutions.Patient advocacy groups, especially the Metastatic Breast Cancer Network, pushed for a separate day because much of the public conversation around breast cancer focusses on early detection and survival, while people with advanced disease often feel left out.WHAT METASTATIC MEANSCancer begins when cells grow in an uncontrolled way. In metastatic breast cancer, these cells travel through the blood or lymphatic system and form tumours in other organs. Common sites of spread include:Bones, which can cause pain or fractures Lungs, which may lead to breathlessness or coughingLiver, which can cause fatigue, abdominal discomfort, or jaundiceBrain, which may cause headaches, seizures, or changes in memory and balanceMetastasis does not mean the cancer has become a different cancer. If breast cancer spreads to the bones, it is still breast cancer in the bones and is treated with breast cancer therapies.Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women worldwide. In the United States, an estimated 155,000 to 170,000 people are living with metastatic breast cancer, and researchers expect this number to rise as more people live longer with the disease. In India, studies suggest that around 5 to 25 per cent of breast cancer patients may have metastatic disease at diagnosis or during the course of illness. One large Indian study found metastasis in about 13 per cent of more than 76,000 women, with bone being the most common site of spread.Late diagnosis remains a major challenge in many parts of India. Limited awareness, delayed medical consultation, and unequal access to cancer screening and treatment can allow the disease to progress before it is detected.TREATMENT AND QUALITY OF LIFEThere is currently no permanent cure for metastatic breast cancer, but it is not an automatic death sentence. Many patients live for years with the disease when they receive the right treatment and supportive care.Treatment depends on the type of breast cancer and where it has spread. Doctors may use chemotherapy, hormone therapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, surgery, or radiation. The main goals are to slow cancer growth, manage pain and other symptoms, and protect the patient’s quality of life.Care also includes emotional and social support. People living with Stage 4 cancer often need counselling, pain management, nutrition guidance, financial help, and support from family and patient groups.- Ends
