Published Oct 5, 2026, 2:51 AM EDT Sam Woods is TheGamer’s Senior Reporter. He’s been in games journalism since 2020 and has undertaken a variety of roles in that time. These have included roles such as SEO Editor, Managing Editor at DualShockers, and Global Head of Gaming, and he's also been seen on the BBC. He was promoted to the Senior Reporter position in 2025 following a series of high-quality reports and exclusives for TheGamer. Since 2020, Sam has written over 3,000 articles and specializes in telling the stories of the people behind the games. He’s interviewed the biggest game directors, some of the industry’s top talents, told the stories of how indie games came to be, and spoken to players about what really makes them tick. He’s also interviewed some of the world’s biggest musical artists to find out how the medium has inspired their work, and TV and Film actors about their roles in video game adaptations. He even hosted a PAX panel in 2021 and made a documentary in 2024 surrounding the creation of a Disney game. Alongside this, Sam focuses on breaking news. He got the scoop on Perfect Dark’s cancellation, provided context on some AI drama, and revealed that Lady Dimitrescu’s actress would love to step back into the character’s giant shoes. These articles have been picked up by the biggest gaming sites, including IGN, GameSpot, and PC Gamer. He also loves to dive into the numbers behind the games. Sam’s journey in games journalism has taken him all over the world. He’s covered Gamescom in Germany, Summer Game Fest in Los Angeles, and Tokyo Game Show in Japan, each on three occasions. He’s been learning Japanese since 2024 with the intention of identifying and translating Japanese-language news and bringing it to English-language audiences first, something he’s done countless times. Sam’s first review was 2020’s Battletoads reboot, and he’s since reviewed games in The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario, and Pokemon franchises. It's been more than 11 years since the last mainline Metal Gear Solid game, Metal Gear Solid 5, hit shelves on September 1, 2015. Hideo Kojima leaving the studio to form Kojima Productions hasn't helped matters, and the only post-Kojima release in the franchise, Survive, was dubbed one of the worst games of 2018. There is hope, however, that it could one day return, especially now that the game's original Solid Snake actor, Akio Otsuka, has revealed he wants to make "one more Metal Gear." Previously, Otsuka said he wouldn't want to work on another Metal Gear Solid game without Kojima, and in a new interview with Bunshun in Japan, he continued to heap praise on the legendary director. He told the publication he had a "sense of pride" in having worked with Kojima, and because of that, he made the previous comments saying he didn't want to work on another Metal Gear without him. Now, though, it seems Otsuka's thoughts have changed, and he's eager to get back in the recording booth as Solid Snake for one final time. Speaking on a previous podcast, Otsuka had said that he thinks Konami should make one more Metal Gear Solid game. He was pressed on this by Bunshun's interviewer. "I really do feel that way. There are Metal Gear fans all over the world, and they have been waiting patiently for it. So, for their sake, let’s make one more Metal Gear," he said, translated by TheGamer. "Since he’s making his own games with Death Stranding, I think, 'Why not? It’s okay to do it.' That’s how I feel." Let’s make one more Metal Gear— Akio Otsuka When asked whether he'd spoken to Kojima recently about making another game together, Otsuka laughed and told the interviewer, "I'll leave that to your imagination." These days, Kojima seems more interested in tapping up Hollywood stars for his games. Physint, his action-espionage title recently picked up by Xbox, just revealed its leads, with Bill Skarsgård playing the protagonist and Charlee Fraser supporting him.
