Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 Review Scores Round-Up

Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 releases in less than a week, and review scores for the game that will finally set MGS 4 free from its PS3 prison are starting to appear. Good news for those who have been waiting almost 20 years to play Guns of the Patriots on other platforms, as right now, Vol. 2’s review scores are pretty great. The Master Collection sequel currently has an 85 on Metacritic, and a slightly lower but still great 84 on OpenCritic. While those aren’t scores that will have a collection of old games competing to be among the highest-rated of the year, they’re a significant step up from where Vol. 1 landed. The first collection wound up with a 74 on Metacritic and a 73 on OpenCritic. Vol. 1’s review scores suffered due to limited video options, and certain resolution options being broken during the review period. Vol. 2 doesn’t appear to be suffering from any such problems. “It's hard to think of a better collection of games than those on Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2,” writes VGC’s Jordan Middler, who awarded the collection a perfect score, labeling it “An unmissable collection for Metal Gear fans.” “This is the Metal Gear collection that we've all been waiting for, and it's proven to be well worth the wait,” reads Maddie Fisher’s 9/10 review at DualShockers. At Push Square, John Cal McCormick writes, “The nanomachines, the fashion model robot monsters, the flamenco dance battle, the fried eggs, the cigarette smoking underpants monkey, and that ridiculous final boss, all running at 60 frames-per-second and looking better than ever. This is good, isn't it?” awarding the collection an 8/10. If you hadn’t played Metal Gear Solid 4 before, I bet you want to now. It certainly sounds like Konami has learned from its mistakes and ensured Vol. 2 lived up to the lofty expectations Metal Gear fans have in a way that Vol. 1 did not. Inarguably, even more important for a collection that includes Guns of the Patriots. It would have been easy to simply port the game and bank on people being happy that they finally don’t need to boot it up on a PS3 to play it, regardless of quality and improvements. Early reviews suggest this collection does more than that. Even though impressions about Vol. 2 are now out in the wild, it might still be a few days until we find out if the claims that its Switch and Switch 2 versions have been altered to remove the in-game PS3. Images of the new collection’s manuals suggest the PS3 you can sometimes see in the pause menu has been replaced on Nintendo consoles, but remains on others, even Xbox and PC.
