Mehli Mistry opposes further delay in Tata Trusts row, questions trustee eligibility

Mehli Mistry asked the Maharashtra Charity Commissioner to reject further delays and verify a proposed trustee's eligibility. The submissions focus attention on procedural delays and conditions prescribed by the original trust deed.Charity Commissioner's decision on submissions remains unreported. New Delhi,Oct 16, 2026 08:35 ISTMehli Mistry has opposed further delays in the ongoing Tata Trusts trustee dispute and sought verification of the eligibility of a proposed replacement trustee, reported Moneycontrol. In a submission before the Maharashtra Charity Commissioner in Change Report No. 676 of 2026, Mistry argued that the applicants had failed to respond to his objections filed on June 5, despite nearly four months having passed. He urged the authority not to grant further time for the reply. In a separate submission relating to Change Report No. 678 of 2026, Mistry raised questions over whether the proposed replacement reporting trustee meets the eligibility conditions laid down in the original trust deed. His lawyers argued that Clauses 6 and 18 of the trust deed dated December 7, 1923, require a trustee to be a Parsi practising the Zoroastrian religion. They sought confirmation that the proposed replacement satisfies these conditions. MISTRY ALLEGES DELIBERATE DELAYMistry's lawyers alleged that the applicants had deliberately failed to file their response to prolong the proceedings. They asked the Charity Commissioner not to allow further extensions, the report said. The submissions bring two issues into focus in the ongoing dispute: the pace of proceedings before the Charity Commissioner and the eligibility requirements governing the appointment of trustees. The objections concerning the proposed replacement trustee are based on Mistry's interpretation of the original trust deed. The submissions do not, by themselves, establish that the proposed trustee is ineligible. The Charity Commissioner's decision on these submissions was not reported.- Ends
