Meet BB Cream Nails: The Minimalist Manicure That Makes Your Nails Look Naturally Perfect

@raelondonnails / @nailsbymhI vividly remember discovering BB cream in high school and feeling like I’d cracked the code to life. This simple, (usually) affordable, lightweight product could do so much: smooth skin, even tone, and even hydrate, all at once. I remember wishing we could apply that to all facets of beauty, be it hair, skin, and nails. Until recently, I’d say we haven’t come close. But we just found something new: BB cream nails.Inspired by BB cream for the face, BB cream nails aren’t about concealing the natural nail, but “gently enhancing its natural beauty,” says nail artist Maryna Slynko. “Sheer milky, pink, or beige shades are used to visually even out the tone of the nail plate and create the appearance of healthy, well-groomed nails,” she says. It’s not an exact science. “The color is carefully matched to your natural nail tone, so instead of looking like you’re wearing polish, your nails simply look naturally perfect,” says nail artist Valeriia Telemaniuk. “They’re glossy, clean, healthy-looking—the ‘your nails, but better’ effect everyone is chasing.”“If I had to compare BB Cream nails to something, I’d compare them to great skincare,” says Telemaniuk. “You still look like yourself, just healthier, fresher, and more polished.” Slynko notes that approximately one in three clients chooses a look like this at her studio. “They look fresh, polished, and versatile, pair easily with any style of clothing, and make regrowth less noticeable than dense or bright colors,” she adds. It’s perfect for those who like something minimal, and it makes maintenance way easier. “For years we loved bold reds, neon greens, and deep blacks,” says Telemaniuk. “They’re beautiful, but there’s one problem: two weeks later, your nails tell everyone exactly how long it’s been since your appointment,” she says. Any regrowth will make your nails look less pristine immediately, even if they’re still manicured to perfection.“I believe this trend has become so popular because clients are looking for elegant, low-maintenance manicures that work with every outfit and every occasion,” says nail artist Svitlana Motyl. “Social media has also influenced this shift toward minimalist beauty, where healthy-looking nails are just as desirable as bold designs.”@nailsbymhHow to get BB cream nails“Everything starts with nail preparation,” says Motyl. “Beautiful natural-looking nails require meticulous cuticle work and a perfectly smooth nail surface.” So grab your manicure kit, a file, a cuticle nipper, and even nail-strengthening products if you’re DIYing. “In the salon, I recommend using a rubber or builder base to subtly correct the nail’s architecture before applying a sheer color,” Motyl explains. This look is very personalized to ensure that it looks the most natural. Slynko notes that even shape and length are important. When it comes to choosing a shade, your nail artist can help find one that matches your skin tone, which Motyl says makes a “significant difference” for creating a natural look. “Fair skin usually looks beautiful with sheer milky or soft pink shades, while warmer or deeper skin tones often pair better with caramel, cappuccino, or warm beige hues,” adds Telemaniuk. “The secret isn’t the exact color; it’s that it stays sheer and lets the natural nail peek through.”As far as application goes, Telemaniuk says to keep the polish layers thin. “Whether I’m using hard gel or gel polish, the enhancement should never look bulky or heavy,” she says. “The natural nail should still shine through slightly, and that soft, translucent effect is what makes BB cream nails look luxurious instead of artificial.” If you’re DIYing, she recommends skipping opaque polishes in favor of translucent shades. “Think of them as a tinted moisturizer instead of full-coverage foundation,” she says, noting one or two thin coats with a glossy top coat are perfect.Add Cosmopolitan as a preferred source in your Google search results.Use your Google account to add this to your settings. Then, Motyl recommends following a routine at home to keep your nails and hands healthy in between appointments. “Daily cuticle oil, hand cream, and avoiding using nails as tools help keep nails healthy and polished between appointments,” she suggests.BB cream nail inspiration:“The goal isn’t to change your nails,” says Telemaniuk. “It’s to make people wonder if they’ve always looked that good.” Need some ideas?
