Medical college students in Kozhikode seek better hostel facilities

With the new batch of undergraduate students going to join the Government Medical College, Kozhikode, in around two weeks, the college union has urged the authorities to improve hostel facilities.E.S. Anaya, joint secretary of the union, told The Hindu on Monday (September 7) that some hostel buildings were very old and in urgent need of repair and maintenance. There are three hostels for undergraduate boys and two for girls. Some girl students are also put up in the quarters meant for senior resident doctors. House surgeons have a separate quarters building. Though the construction of two new hostel buildings is almost complete, they are yet to be thrown open for stay.“A majority of undergraduate students seeking admission here are girls. However, because of a lack of space, four to six students are forced to stay in one hostel room. This is affecting their studies,” Ms. Anaya claimed. The union functionaries said they have already taken up the concerns with the college authorities. On Monday afternoon, a section of students staged a token protest on the campus. They demanded that steps be taken to open the new hostel buildings whose construction has already been completed. Arrangements should be made to complete the work on the under-construction buildings. The authorities should ensure hostel accommodation for first-year students, while those currently staying there need not be asked to vacate the premises. The hostel facilities for postgraduate students should be enhanced. Along with this, unused paying guest facilities and other places on the campus should be utilised for the benefit of students. Also, repair and maintenance work should be urgently taken up in the existing hostel buildings, the students’ union functionaries said. The college authorities, however, maintained that the Directorate of Medical Education had already been informed about the situation.
