Audiences' mileage will vary on how well or poorly these characters were handled before. However, the MCU's versions will inevitably be compared to what came before. This goes from the characters' arcs and actors' performances to superhero suits and team rosters. And it's through such comparisons that a smart difference between the MCU's X-Men and Fox's versions emerges. The MCU's X-Men Cast Is Younger Than Fox's OG Team But Older Than The Reboot Marvel Taking the six confirmed X-Men cast members into account, Marvel Studios has found the sweet spot of finding actors who aren't as old or young as previous iterations. By the time the movie comes out on May 5, 2028, the average age of the known cast members will be 32.2 years old. The youngest actor in X-Men is Kit Connor, who will be just 24, while Adam Driver enters as the oldest at 44. The 32.2 average age for the MCU's X-Men actors is right between the average for Fox's original team and the prequel reboot. The main stars of 2000's X-Men were 35.7 years old on average, with Stewart and Ian McKellen driving up that number. X-Men: First Class' actors average 30.7 years old, with Nicholas Hoult and Caleb Landry Jones just 21, and Lucas Till only 20. If we break it down by specific characters, the MCU comes in the middle the majority of the time. Sink, Connor, Boyd, and Abbott all fall between the ages of the prior actors to play their characters. Driver might not be Magneto, but if we compare him against McKellen and Michael Fassbender, the then-44-year-old star does as well. Only Weaving and Navarrette will be older than the actresses who previously played their parts. But the mutant reboot is clearly aiming to have its characters debut in a slightly different age bracket than what audiences have seen before. The X-Men Cast's Ages Are A Good Sign For The MCU That's a smart strategy for the MCU after factoring in the fact that this will be the third iteration of many of these characters this century. Marvel Studios must do everything it can to separate its X-Men from what came before, which could be more challenging after bringing so many icons back through the multiverse in Avengers: Doomsday. But the cast's ages are a good first step. The X-Men will enter the MCU at a point where most are still young enough to get training from Xavier, but they won't be old enough to be fully established heroes. That allows a natural entry point for the story and this mutant world to expand. The characters also won't feel too young to take on such prominent roles in the shared universe. Additionally, X-Men's cast gives Marvel plenty of runway to keep these characters around long-term. Feige has already teased the potential for multiple sagas' worth of MCU storytelling focused on the mutants, and that should include a decade or more of adventures for many of these characters. All the X-Men members can stick around that long, or longer, with ease and allow audiences to watch these young adults grow into experienced superheroes. The MCU's Chosen X-Men Characters Set It Apart From Fox's Franchise MovieStillsDB It's also notable how Marvel Studios has managed to create a whole new X-Men movie lineup after only announcing six of its characters. Professor X, Cyclops, Jean, Storm, Rogue, and Emma Frost have all been in Fox's X-Men movies, but they've never all appeared in the same one. Emma was missing from the original Fox films, while Rogue was left out of the prequels. This opens the door for fresh character interactions and relationships within the MCU. For instance, Emma has only ever met Xavier (and Cyclops, depending on how you classify X-Men Origins: Wolverine's Emma Frost-like character). Marvel Studios could now have Emma and Jean interact to test their telepathic powers. We could even see Emma's romance with Cyclops materialize on the big screen now. There is also the completely new element that using Mister Sinister provides. Rather than do Magneto, Sebastian Shaw, Apocalypse, etc. again, Marvel has brought in one of the X-Men's biggest comic villains. Fox had many plans to utilize Nathaniel Essex, who is using the alias Nathaniel Milbury in the MCU, but they never came to fruition. That franchise's loss is now Marvel Studios' gain. As exciting as it will be to see Xavier tested by a villain like Mister Sinister, what his presence means for the likes of Cyclops and Jean is more intriguing. The villain has personal stories connected to both of the founding X-Men heroes in the comics, with them usually tied to his desire to create the perfect mutant. Seeing him interact with Storm, Rogue, Emma, and whoever else winds up joining the X-Men cast will be fun, too.
