Sign in to your ScreenRant account One MCU actor's comments about the prospect of their Marvel story getting a sequel seems to be bad news for anyone who'd been hoping to see the character return in the near future. Over the years, the MCU timeline has expanded almost exponentially, much to the franchise's benefit and challenge alike. While there are more of Marvel's comic characters on-screen now to appreciate than ever before, that also adds an extra obstacle in terms of said characters getting screentime, since things have to be split between a considerable roster of heroes and villains. With audiences having mixed reception to some of the MCU's more recent releases, there has also been efforts to reduce down the number of movies and shows the franchise is releasing in any one year to try and ensure results, which diminishes the prospect of screentime further. Based on the most recent comments from one MCU actor about their character's prospects of appearing in a sequel soon, it does seem this has at minimum played a potential role in reducing the chances of one Marvel release getting a sequel or follow-up anytime soon. This is understandable given the MCU's current focus is naturally on the upcoming Avengers movies, but does mean one avenue that seems primed for more expansion has to lie dormant for now. During a Reddit Ask Me Anything thread where Jack Russel/Werewolf by Night actor Gael García Bernal answered questions about his career while promoting his upcoming movie Hombre Al Agua, which premiered at this year's Toronto International Film Festival, Bernal responded to a question about whether he would be returning to the MCU following his role in the 2022 Special Presentation by stating that: I urge you to do whatever you can, whatever is in your power, to push Marvel into some sense of responsibility and also of ambition. Because they need to do something with Jack and Ted and Werewolf By Night. It was for me a wonderful project to do, I loved doing it, I had so much fun experiencing that, and for me it was only a taste. I wish I could do more, we had many plans, I hope they materialize one day! This appears to cement the idea that there are currently no plans for a Werewolf by Night sequel to come to fruition, despite the implication that some ideas were discussed at some point between Werewolf by Night's conception, creation, and aftermath. Though this is in line with the MCU's current more toned-down approach in terms of its release roster, this update does seem to be something of a shame for the franchise, especially because Werewolf by Night seemed like a perfect release to get follow-ups that could expand further on the often overlooked supernatural side of the MCU's world. Why Werewolf By Night Is The Perfect Project For An MCU Sequel (Or More) Unlike much of the current MCU, Werewolf by Night is largely disconnected from the main story of the franchise, and exists in its own separate spooky sphere. While this presents its own challenges, it also presents fresh opportunities for the MCU, since there's not been anything quite of Werewolf by Night's creature feature kind of perspective in the overarching universe quite yet, and since this allowed the original Werewolf by Night to run its own course in a way that does appear to have enamored a portion of the MCU's prospective audience who may have been less inclined if the Special Presentation had been required to force links to other releases or characters, or match the MCU's general tone. Given Werewolf by Night released in 2022 in its original black-and-white version - and Werewolf by Night in Color released October of the next year to boot - expanding the series further could hold some suitable weight for the franchise in terms of cementing a Halloween release for the MCU, if such a thing does ever come to fruition for the franchise later down the line.
