Exclusive: The reason for Mckenna Grace’s absence from the final season of Young Sheldon has finally been revealed. Grace first appeared as Paige Swanson in Young Sheldon season 2, episode 2, “A Rival Prodigy and Sir Isaac Newton.” She was another genius kid like Sheldon, whom he met in Dr. Sturgis’ class. The character became an instant fan favorite for her interactions with Sheldon and Missy. As a result, audiences looked forward to Grace’s recurring appearances each season. However, in Young Sheldon’s final season, Grace couldn’t reprise her role, leaving viewers curious about her character's fate. In an interview with ScreenRant's Adam Holmes, Jessica Radloff, author of the new Young Sheldon behind-the-scenes novel, opened up about the messiness behind Grace’s final Paige appearance. The behind-the-scenes drama surrounding Grace’s season 6 return ultimately led the creative team to exclude Paige from Young Sheldon season 7. Even though the producers and cast members would have loved to bring Grace back for the final season, they intentionally didn’t write Paige to avoid another scheduling conflict, which was one of the problems they had during season 6. Jessica Radloff : “Yeah, no, that definitely impacted why we did not see Paige in the final season, and the producers made clear that this was nothing against Mckenna. They love Mckenna. Raegan Revord loves Mckenna. Raegan and Mckenna are great friends. This came down to McKenna's team had reached out originally. I believe it was also her mother that you know said there's a break in her schedule. This was season six. You know she'd love to come back, and the writer said, ‘Amazing, we'd love to have her back.’ Paige has always been such a fan favorite from the very beginning. So they wrote a couple episodes centered on Paige, and heading into the second episode, Mckenna. There was a role that she was also going to be doing, and you know they found out that that might impact her being able to be on Young Sheldon for this particular episode. The problem was is that she'd already committed to the second episode. The writers already wrote the episode. It wasn't, you know, they couldn't get her out of that because this was too far down the line, and she had committed. Beyond the season 6 conflict between the show’s team and Grace’s agents, the shortened episode count for Young Sheldon season 7 also forced the producers to scrap several storylines they'd originally planned. Radloff explained that the producers weren’t willing to go through too much trouble, as they anticipated that bringing back Grace could mean another potential scheduling conflict because of how in-demand the Emmy nominee is. Radlofff: “This was another aspect: is that you did have the double strikes that impacted the show's episode count in season seven. It was only 14 episodes instead of 22 or 23, so you're servicing all these characters with less opportunity to do so. They also had to scrap. They were going to do different storylines in season seven that they had to either shorten or take away completely because they didn't have time to do it. So that played a part. But then also, when I talked to the producers, they admitted that because things got very heated with her agents in season six over that second episode, and making sure she eventually, I think, she had to pull out of the project she was going to do because you know she had committed to young Sheldon, and I think it was just so much. There was just a lot of difficulties with the scheduling, and granted, she's so busy no matter what, it was going to be too much trouble to go through that again in season seven, and then risk what if she needs to go off and do something else. So that was the real reason we didn't see Paige.” Grace’s last appearance in Young Sheldon featured Paige running away with Missy using George’s truck. Their plans to travel to Florida were foiled when a cop pulled them over and called their parents about their whereabouts. Grace remains one of Hollywood’s busiest young stars of her generation. The Ghostbusters: Afterlife star has two high-profile projects lined up, including The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, which premieres on November 20, 2026, and Netflix’s live-action mystery series Scooby-Doo: Origins, which is expected to debut in 2027. Young Sheldon was The Big Bang Theory’s first prequel spin-off and became a huge success for CBS. Iain Armitage led the show, playing the younger version of Jim Parsons’ iconic character, Sheldon Cooper. Annie Potts, Zoe Perry, Lance Barber, Raegan Revord, and Montana Jordan portrayed the rest of the Cooper family. Because of its critical success, the show spawned a sequel sitcom aboutGeorgie Cooper and Mandy McAllister. Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage is now in season 3 and is one of CBS' most popular shows today. All seven seasons of Young Sheldon are now streaming on HBO Max and Netflix.
