Matthew McConaughey’s Tequila Brand Debuts in Costa Rica Through Luxury Hotel Partnership

Pantalones Organic Tequila, the brand owned by actor Matthew McConaughey and his wife, Camila McConaughey, has made its official debut in Costa Rica through a partnership with Nekajui, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, on the Papagayo Peninsula in Guanacaste. The debut, announced on Oct. 14, introduces The Cowboy & Mermaid, a collection of four exclusive cocktails created for the resort. The menu blends Costa Rican ingredients with nods to the couple’s Texas and Brazil roots and to the sabanero cowboy heritage of Guanacaste. “We literally met over margaritas, and have been known to enjoy a paloma as well. Tequila was the juice on our lips when we first spoke the language of love,” Matthew and Camila McConaughey said. “Bringing Pantalones to Costa Rica feels natural and Nekajui offers the perfect place to kick off your boots, sip tequila, and enjoy the view.” The cocktails are served at five venues across the resort. They include Puna, the signature restaurant conceived by chef Diego Muñoz, and Ámbar, a bar suspended among the treetops. The collection is also available at Niri Beach Club, at Cooper’s, a hidden speakeasy, and at La Casona, the resort’s lobby lounge. “At Nekajui, we believe the most meaningful travel experiences reveal the spirit of a destination,” said Cristian Albacar, general manager of Nekajui, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve. “Our collaboration with Pantalones has given us the opportunity to put a Nekajui twist on Matthew and Camila’s favorite cocktails, paying homage to their Texas and Brazil roots while continuing to deliver the rare, immersive experiences that define a Ritz-Carlton Reserve stay.” Each of the four drinks reworks a classic with local ingredients. The Goiaba is a margarita made with reposado tequila, pink guava, agave, citrus and guava salt, a tribute to a fruit loved in both Costa Rica and Brazil. The Tixos Old Fashioned combines añejo tequila with cacao distillate, Costa Rican cold brew coffee and spiced chocolate bitters. It is meant to bridge the bold character of Texas with Costa Rica’s coffee and cacao traditions. Guacachile is a spicy margarita built on blanco tequila and mezcal, with mandarin lime, agave, avocado, jalapeño and Tajín. Palomitas, a take on the paloma, mixes blanco tequila with Texas Ruby Red grapefruit, Costa Rican mandarin lime and coconut soda, finished with a popcorn salt rim that gives the drink its name. Pantalones is a USDA-certified organic tequila made from 100% blue Weber agave and distilled in Amatitán, in the Mexican state of Jalisco. The company describes the Costa Rica launch as part of a broader international expansion and says the brand has collected more than 55 awards, including Double Gold medals at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Nekajui, whose name comes from the Chorotega word for “lush garden,” opened in 2025 as the first Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Central and South America. The resort has 107 ocean-facing rooms, suites and treetop tents, along with 36 private residences, and sits about 45 minutes from the international airport in Liberia. It is part of a wave of high-end openings that is reshaping Guanacaste’s luxury hotel scene. The cowboy theme draws on a tradition that remains central to life in Guanacaste, where the sabanero, the area’s working cattle hand, is still celebrated at fiestas, topes and rodeos across the region.
