Matthew McConaughey exposed himself to Jimmy Kimmel: ‘I’m going to rub it against you’

Matthew McConaughey apparently prefers to take an intimate approach. Jimmy Kimmel has revealed the extraordinarily intimate moment the Oscar winner attempted to cheer him up at the Emmys – while still very much in the middle of using a urinal. The late-night host shared the story during an appearance by Woody Harrelson on Jimmy Kimmel Live! He told Harrelson that he had become emotional during the ceremony’s In Memoriam segment, which included a tribute to Cleto Escobedo, his childhood friend and longtime Jimmy Kimmel Live! bandleader who died aged 59 last November. Understandably overwhelmed, the 58-year-old slipped away to the bathroom to compose himself, only to find that Matthew McConaughey was already there. ‘I’m washing my hands and I notice next to me – I mean, right next to me – Matthew McConaughey is at the urinal,’ Kimmel recalled. Kimmel and McConaughey have been long-time friends (Picture: Disney General Entertainment Con) The 56-year-old actor spotted that something was wrong and asked Kimmel if he was OK, prompting the presenter to explain what had happened. McConaughey then, recognising his friend could use a shoulder to cry on, turned around and embraced him. There was just one fairly significant logistical issue. ‘He gives me a very nice hug – he hugs me very warmly – and I am hugging him for a little while, and I said, “Is your penis out?”’ Kimmel recalled. According to Kimmel, McConaughey calmly confirmed: ‘Yes it is. Yes it is.’ He added: ‘In fact, I’m going to rub it up against you a little bit.’ At that point, Woody Harrelson emerged from a bathroom stall, which would have been the moment a dreamer began to suspect this wasn’t real life, if it wasn’t implausible enough already. And, of course, Harrelson and the Oscar-winning actor have worked together many times (Picture: Getty Images) Harrelson, who is currently promoting Apple TV series Brothers alongside his longtime friend McConaughey, remembered stumbling across the unusual display of male friendship. He told Kimmel that he decided whatever was happening between the pair was none of his business. ‘I never try to grade or critique what other people are doing, and I figured you guys, whatever your thing is, I didn’t want to be the guy to say, “No, not in the restroom at the Emmys!”’ he joked. Harrelson added that after realising why Kimmel had been upset, the trio reconvened in the hallway for a group hug – one which, presumably, involved fastened trousers. Despite the unconventional circumstances, Kimmel said McConaughey’s intervention was just what he needed in the moment. Escobedo had been Kimmel’s best friend since the pair were nine years old and became a familiar face to millions of viewers as the saxophonist and bandleader of Cleto and the Cletones. Following his death last November, Kimmel dedicated an emotional 22-minute monologue to his friend, telling viewers the pair had shared a bond stretching back decades before either found themselves on television. ‘We laughed so hard. We had our own language that almost no one else understood,’ he said at the time. Which perhaps explains why Kimmel knew exactly how his friend would have responded to the sight of an emotional Jimmy Kimmel receiving a trouserless cuddle from Matthew McConaughey in an Emmys bathroom.
