That performance was notable for a superb bogey-free 64 in his final round that saw him surge up the leaderboard. He managed one win on the Canadian Tour at the Telus Edmonton Open in 2005, while also taking the crown at the 2008 Cataraqui Pro-Am. McQuillan’s obituary in the Kingston Whig Standard reads: “It is with heavy hearts we share the passing of Matthew Justin McQuillan (Matty to most). “He passed away at KGH Wednesday August 5, 2026, surrounded by family. “Matty was a respected golfer, devoted son, hilarious brother, and friend. His father, Mark, started teaching him how to swing the club at the young age of ten and his passion and talent grew immensely. “Starting as a junior on the Canadian Tour and making it to the PGA in 2011, Matt developed lifelong friendships while mentoring anyone who loved the game of golf. Most read in Sport “There will be a celebration of life held at the ANAF at a later date to be determined and announced by family. “He will be deeply missed by many and his spirit, love and compassion will be remembered every day. Rest easy, Matty. We love you.” In recent years, McQuillan had been teaching the next generation of golfers in his hometown of Kingston, Ontario. Fans have been paying tribute on social media. One wrote: “Way too young! Damn, hate to see this.” Another wrote: “Gone too soon. The golf world mourns the loss of Matt McQuillan at 45. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.” Comment now
