Masters Of The Universe 2 Chances Addressed By Director After Massive Streaming Redemption

EXCLUSIVE: After a massive streaming performance, Masters of the Universe director Travis Knight addresses the future of Eternia. The fantasy franchise released its second live-action film this year, the first since 1987, and starring Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam Glenn/He-Man. With a final worldwide gross of $114 million against a reported budget between $170 and $200 million, the movie significantly underperformed at the box office. However, it proved to be a major hit on Prime Video, where it was the streaming platform's number one movie for five consecutive weeks. In an interview with ScreenRant's Tatiana Hullender for Wildwood, which Knight also directed, he was asked about the prospects of a Masters of the Universe sequel. The filmmaker emphasized that the decision is outside his control while acknowledging that he remains hopeful about continuing the story, is grateful for the experience of making the movie, and proud of the final version. Check out his comments below: These things are out of our control. It was such a joy making that movie, I had so much fun working with that team. We had so much fun, and I think that comes through in the experience of watching the movie. In the end, these sorts of decisions are out of our control, you always imagine where these people’s lives go after the end of the movie, and if the universe, in its wisdom, asks us to make more of these things, we would be delighted to give them more. But, in the end, that’s out of our control, which is why every single movie you make, you put everything you have into it, and you just hope that the movie lives on its own and finds connection with the people you’re trying to reach. While the film tells a complete story, Masters of the Universe's ending sets up multiple avenues for a sequel. Adam is back on Eternia, has saved his home, and fully embraced the power of Grayskull, allowing him to now grow beyond his origin story. He does not know about his twin sister, Princess Adora/She-Ra (Lauren Saliu), who is seen in one of the post-credits scenes. The return of Skeletor (Jared Leto) is also teased in a different post-credits scene when Evil-Lyn (Alison Brie) takes his skull, and the villain's laughter is heard in the background. As for where Adora is in the post-credits scene, Knight previously confirmed she is in the iconic Masters of the Universe location known as the Fright Zone, and that if a sequel becomes a reality, "She-Ra would play a big part in it because she has a huge role in the mythology." Since the Fright Zone is tied to Hordak, the setting's live-action debut introduces the potential for the franchise villain to be in a sequel as well, perhaps as the main antagonist this time around instead of Skeletor. In terms of how the 2026 movie was received, the response from critics was mixed per the 67% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes, but the audience score was more favorable at 85%. In ScreenRant's Masters of the Universe review, Molly Freeman gave the film eight out of 10 stars, calling it "this summer's hopecore movie" that "leans into the silliness, managing to strike a delightful balance between tongue-in-cheek nods to the cartoon and a grounded story about characters trying to do what's right." Choose the movie with the higher Rotten Tomatoes score. Despite such positive reviews, chances of a sequel seemed slim after its box office performance, but there may still be a future after dominating Prime Video's streaming charts for so long, along with the fact that Knight is on board to tell more stories within the franchise. A sequel that goes directly to Prime Video and skips theaters is one option that could potentially be explored given where the movie performed best. Along with Adam, Adora, Skeletor, and Evil-Lyn, other Masters of the Universe characters who may return for a sequel include Teela (Camilla Mendes), Duncan/Man-At-Arms (Idris Elba), Roboto (Kristin Wiig), Cringer (Tom Wilson), Queen Marlena (Charlotte Riley), the Sorceress (Morena Baccarin), Fisto (Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson), Ram-Man (Jon Xue Zhang), Mekaneck (James Wilkins), Dian (Christiaan Bettridge), and Hussein (Christian Vunipola). Masters of the Universe is streaming on Prime Video.
