Sign in to your TheGamer account The post-mortem on BioWare and Mass Effect continues with new details about the canceled game, and potential reasons pointing to why it was scrapped six years after it was announced, emerging all the time. The trouble is, with the developers providing the inside information having to do it anonymously, how reliable that information is remains up for debate. BioWare Devs Were Seemingly Concerned About Including LGBTQ+ References In Mass Effect Universe BioWare The latest update on what was potentially happening behind the scenes at BioWare during Mass Effect Universe’s development comes from French news outlet BFM Tech. BFM journalist Sylvain Trinel claims to have talked to ex-BioWare devs who revealed they pre-emptively removed LGBTQ+ imagery from Mass Effect demos before showing them to EA following the company's acquisition by a consortium led by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. The imagery in question was a flag that developers decided looked too much like a Pride flag, deciding it wasn’t worth the risk to leave it in when showing EA how the game’s development was progressing. Especially since this was at a time when it already felt like the new Mass Effect game, and BioWare as a whole, wasn’t something EA viewed as all that important. Conflicting Reports The reporting on what allegedly happened with this flag, and its removal, has caused some friction. Some have claimed the flag was left in when the demo was shown to EA and the publisher was asked to remove it. That is not what was initially reported. The devs who spoke to BFM reportedly removed the flag before anyone from EA was ever shown the footage. Kala Elizabeth, a Mass Effect fan who has been helping to spearhead the Save Mass Effect movement, seems to claim that nothing about the report is true. They also claim to have talked to developers who were working on Universe and, while the game had same-sex romances, there were no flags. BFM’s report on the alleged removal of LGBTQ+ imagery from internal demos also includes information regarding the progress of Universe’s development. Although BioWare devs working on the game were fearful, and part of a far smaller team than needed due to prior cuts, there was positivity surrounding how the game was coming together, with a late 2028 release date being targeted. Now, that is no longer the case, and Universe has been canceled. The Save Mass Effect campaign continues, with billboards going up throughout the rest of this year after an initial showing in Times Square. Whether the series ends up being saved or not, for now, we still have the Mass Effect TV show to look forward to. That hasn’t been canceled and is still being worked on at Amazon.
