No, Marvel's Wolverine Didn't Turn Mystique Gay - She's Been Bisexual For Ages Published Sep 15, 2026, 9:28 AM EDT Marvel's Wolverine is out now, and if you've been following the discourse over the past week, you won't be surprised to hear that it's proving quite divisive. Some of the points of contention are absolutely valid, like the ongoing debate on whether the game holds your hand too much. However, one of the sillier discourses I've seen pop up is regarding Mystique's sexuality, as many are surprised to see that Wolvering depicts the mutant married to a woman. The usual crowd is bemoaning how Insomniac have made her 'woke', but the only problem with that is the fact that Mystique has been queer for a while. Mystique Has A New Wife In Marvel's Wolverine, But Her Being Queer Isn't Anything New Slight spoilers for Wolverine ahead: the game depicts Mystique being married to Tyger Tiger, AKA Jessán Hoan. You can come across their wedding photo, and they are clearly in a relationship when you see them interact. Of course, this has just become another thing for certain corners of the gaming community to complain about. But that is ignoring how this is largely in keeping with the source material. In the comics, Mystique has a long-running relationship with Destiny, AKA Irene Adler. In the primary universe, Earth-616, the pair are even married. It has been widely reported that they were always intended to be a queer couple, even in the early 1980s, but the writers were held back from making it too explicit. So, we got nods to their relationship here and there - and a story that involved them raising children together. Y'know, as gal pals. There's an old comic panel where Mystique transforms into a man and calls Destiny "my love" before going out dancing with her, which might be the funniest way to get around censors I've seen. Finally, the pair shared their first on-panel kiss in 2019. Since then, we have seen them very clearly depicted as a couple, and even get married. Now, Wolverine is out and has changed things around a little. Mystique is married to Tyger instead, and those who seemingly have no knowledge of her comic book counterpart are up in arms - not that she's not with Destiny, but because she's with a woman at all. Given the state of the gaming community, we will no doubt see this misinformed take shared around, but there are plenty of fans happy to set the record straight.
