Marvel fans are constantly debating which team is stronger: the Avengers or the X-Men? In this article, we're throwing that question wide to our readers, but why stop there? Why not hold a vote to crown the strongest Marvel superteam EVER? In this article, we'll provide a short argument for several of Marvel's biggest superteams as the strongest of all time, ending with a poll where fans can vote for the winner. You can vote for multiple top picks in the poll at the end of this article, and doing so will reveal how other readers have ranked each entry. For this article, we're only looking at established teams, with no one-off assemblages like the God Squad, Phoenix Five or the beyond-godlike Ultimate Ultimates. We'll also try to skip any teams whose heaviest hitters all fit within another (e.g. most of the WWII Invaders eventually joined the Avengers.) With no further ado, here are the contenders... The Avengers Earth's Mightiest Heroes are one of the major contenders for this list, boasting heavy hitters including Thor, Sentry, Scarlet Witch, Captain Marvel, Hulk, Wonder Man and more. One of the Avengers' biggest strengths is their diversity of power sets - Scarlet Witch can rewrite reality itself, while Hulk can punch harder than any other being in existence. However, they also have some major vulnerabilities, with a notable absence of psychic protection. They also tend to field small teams with mid-size rosters, so when assessing the army of powerhouses that the Avengers have to draw on, it's worth noting that only around nine of them tend to unite at one time (though the Avengers do have an established procedure for calling in reserves, using their identicards to summon help.) The X-Men The X-Men are a veritable army, with over 200 members across decades of stories. They also have a massive range of skillsets - Omega-level mutants like Storm, Iceman and Phoenix may as well be gods, but lesser powerhouses like Cyclops, Sage and Forge are genius tacticians or world-class inventors. The X-Men tend to have four or five teams assembled at any one time, leading to the sense that they outnumber most other Marvel teams. They're also stacked with teleporters and telepaths who make them a far more effective fighting force, and tend to live and train together as a found family, making for a well-oiled combat machine. The Defenders The Defenders are built on the bedrock of four of Marvel's most powerful beings: the Hulk, Namor the Sub-Mariner, Doctor Strange and Silver Surfer. Other heroes like the Son of Satan, Darkhawk, Valkyrie and Nighthawk offer variety and resources comparable to the Avengers. One of the biggest strengths of the Defenders is that they're backed by the magic of the Elder Goddess Gaia, lending some curious advantages. For example, whenever a founding member is absent, the team tend to magically stumble across a replacement who offers them the same powers, e.g. Doctor Strange ending up replaced by Clea or Loki, or Hulk being swapped out for She-Hulk or Red Harpy. In that sense, their core powers are more reliable than any other team. And if you're thinking along the lines of single members making a team unbeatable, the Defenders Beyond technically recruited the Beyonder himself for a short stint, with metaphysical power beyond reckoning. The Fantastic Four Everyone knows the Fantastic Four, and it's easy to dismiss their stretchy, fiery, superstrong and invisible power sets as nothing compared to bigger teams, however there are some major counterpoints to keep in mind. First, Invisible Woman is one of Marvel's most powerful heroes of all time. The last few decades of stories have doubled and tripled down on the idea that her true power is to control light itself. She can literally snuff out the Sun or punch a hole in a Celestial, but also has the fine control to create a jet out of invisible constructs or imprison an army of superheroes in individual cells. It's also worth keeping in mind that the godlike Franklin Richards and Omega-level mutant Storm are among the FF's official members, as are (arguably, thanks to the short-lived 'New Fantastic Four') the Hulk and Ghost Rider. The Guardians of the Galaxy The Guardians have never been about raw power, but before the core MCU group were established, they boasted several cosmic heroes. Phyla-Vell, Major Victory, Moondragon and Adam Warlock are all heavy hitters, while shortlived recruits like Beta Ray Bill, Cosmic Ghost Rider, Nova and Hercules beef up both their power level and their versatility. The Midnight Sons Dealing with the creepy and mystical, the Midnight Sons don't necessarily have the versatility that other groups claim, but they've got a LOT of magic. Doctor Strange, Doctor Voodoo, Jennifer Kale and Nico Minoru have served on the team, each among the world's greatest sorcerers. However, what's really in the Midnight Sons' favor is the number of Ghost Riders who have called the team home, from Johnny Blaze to Kushala the Spirit Rider. While a Ghost Rider's powers can only be unleashed against the guilty, they could burn the Hulk himself to a crisp once that proviso was met. The Thunderbolts Starting out as villains pretending to be heroes, the Thunderbolts ultimately became a force for good. While the founding roster were relatively low-powered D-list villains, they've recruited some considerable powerhouses over time. Red Hulk, Moonstone, MACH-X, Radioactive Man, Monica Rambeau's Spectrum, Persuasion, Shang-Chi, Ghost Rider and Man-Thing are all Avengers-tier heroes, but the member who got the team onto this list is Kobik - a living Cosmic Cube with reality-altering powers comparable to the Beyonder. The Annihilators Often touted as Marvel's most powerful team, the Annihilators boast a roster almost entirely made up of A-tier powerhouses. Silver Surfer, Gladiator, Beta Ray Bill, Quasar and more call this team home - a roster that would make Galactus himself tremble. At the same time, it's worth noting that the Annihilators are terrible as a team, working together poorly and infested with old grudges and oversized egos. The Inhumans There are thousands of Inhumans in Marvel lore, but generally the team title only applies to the Royal Family. Members like Gorgon, Medusa and Triton are strong, but the real big hitters are elemental Crystal, master combatant Karnak and Black Bolt, whose voice can level mountains. Oh, and of course cosmic teleporter Lockjaw. Yes, the Inhumans' dog being one of their most powerful members is funny, but Lockjaw can teleport his targets across space AND realities, and has personally defeated Thanos. Is Hulk still so unbeatable if he's abandoned in an alternate universe without oxygen? The Eternals Like the Inhumans, there are a LOT of Eternals in Marvel lore, but they're not all allied or even heroic. Heavy hitters include the Superman-esque Ikaris, speedster Makkari and matter manipulator Sersi. Warrior Ajak and Thena have fought armies solo, and Sprite is a Loki-level schemer and illusionist. The Eternals have several rules they're genetically forced to obey - such as an inability to willingly hurt Celestials - but have some unique advantages, like the ability to fuse together into the godlike Uni-Mind. They're also reborn when they die at the cost of one human life, meaning they can keep fighting as long as their extradimensional rebirthing chambers remain intact, technically outnumbering even the X-Men. The Illuminati Working behind the scenes, a secret society of heroes have influenced major events in Marvel history. This team brings together the heaviest hitters of many other teams, including Black Bolt, Professor X, Doctor Strange and Mister Fantastic. That's not forgetting later members like the criminally underrated Captain Britain, genius tactician Black Panther and the Hulk himself. Those are our candidates for Marvel's strongest superteam of all time. Be sure to vote in the poll below to help decide the official #1, and if you have a team who aren't listed here, comment them below and we may have time to add them to the poll.
