Marvel’s Spider-Man Might Be Returning Sooner Than Expected

Ever since it was officially confirmed that Marvel’s Wolverine and the Marvel’s Spider-Man games share a universe and continuity, it’s seemed fairly obvious that one will bleed over into the other and potentially feature a crossover of sorts at some point. Even so, Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man franchise has teetered on the thinnest strand of webbing imaginable when it comes to possible crossover cameos. Its open-world New York City is brimming with Marvel superhero Easter eggs, but it's never actually had a genuine superhero cameo (the closest we’ve gotten is a note from Wong). To be fair, James “Logan” Howlett seems to have a full plate ahead of him in Marvel’s Wolverine, which does what Marvel’s Spider-Man couldn’t by having Wolverine trotting the globe in a linear adventure. That said, Wolverine could make a quick stop in New York City on his way to or from Madripoor, Canada, or Japan, and we might’ve already received confirmation of that during Marvel’s Wolverine’s story trailer. If so, it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility for Wolverine to run into Spider-Man. Marvel’s Wolverine Features A Fisk Tower At 0:42 in the new trailer, Sabretooth announces “F***ing Trask,” as he and Wolverine look up at a Trask helicraft that’ll likely have enemies rappelling down from it thereafter. Near the corner of this frame, we can see a building with the same ‘Fisk’ logo that labels Fisk Tower in Marvel’s Spider-Man’s open world, suggesting that this scene takes place in New York City—a location that has not yet been confirmed as a destination that players will go to in Marvel’s Wolverine. As devil’s advocate, there’s a non-zero chance that Marvel’s Spider-Man’s Kingpin simply has Fisk Towers throughout the world. This wouldn’t be too farfetched, either, as we’ve already seen a Japan-based Roxxon-labeled building in a shot from Marvel’s Wolverine extended gameplay trailer. Assuming that there is only one Fisk Tower, it appears as if Wolverine will eventually make his way to Marvel’s Spider-Man’s New York City. It’s hard to believe that any of Wolverine’s adventures will be clandestine, especially if a Sentinel is unleashed in Marvel’s Wolverine, but perhaps a trip to New York City will be what it takes to put mutants on the map in a big way. Likewise, because superheroes and supervillains are already well-established in this universe, it’ll be neat to see how humanity responds to the worldwide discovery of mutants in this continuity. Will Insomniac’s Spider-Man & Wolverine Team Up? Unlike Marvel’s Spider-Man, which teases that there is a wide world of superheroes out there that we somehow never see, Marvel’s Wolverine’s worldbuilding isn’t nearly as solitary. We’ve already seen a handful of X-Men-related mutants, including Omega Red, Mystique, Leech, Callisto, Jean Grey, Sabretooth, and Sunfire. There are bound to be dozens more, either explicitly featured or in lore-rich Easter eggs, but that’ll make sense, as mutant characters may all be either supporting characters or antagonists in Marvel’s Wolverine’s X-Men universe (or Team X universe, the thing closest to it, anyway). As for cameos and crossovers with iconic Marvel characters beyond the realm of mutants, Spider-Man is a shoo-in that Insomniac can keep in its back pocket for a rainy day. While fans might be anticipating Peter Parker’s Spider-Man to appear for a team-up, it might be more realistic to expect that Miles Morales will be the one fortunate enough to meet Wolverine. Miles is seemingly the lone Spider-Man on active duty right now, with Peter taking a brief break to salvage and restore what little was left of Harry Osborn’s Emily-May Foundation. It would be fantastic if Wolverine journeys to New York City and finds himself swarmed by Trask’s Reaver cyborgs or Lady Deathstrike’s Hand ninjas until Spider-Man suddenly appears out of nowhere to participate in an active finisher and help battle the remaining enemies. This would be the perfect opportunity for Insomniac to take advantage of Marvel’s Wolverine and the Marvel’s Spider-Man games being in the same universe, and we’ll be finding out if Spider-Man and Wolverine team up in Marvel’s Wolverine in less than a couple of months.
