Tony Stark's Iron Man is no more, and Marvel just unveiled a shocking replacement in gleaming, all-black armor. Who is this unlikely replacement, and what is his frankly jaw-dropping connection to the genius, billionaire, playboy philanthropist? Debuting in 1962, Iron Man was Marvel's attempt to create a hero who young fans would instinctively dislike - a billionaire industrialist and war profiteer seeking redemption after a lifetime of selfishness. Creators Stan Lee, Don Heck, Jack Kirby and Larry Lieber knew that despite everything against him, once fans grew to care about Tony, they'd love him for life. Nothing has proved that more than Robert Downey Jr.'s depiction of Tony Stark in the MCU, reinventing the Armored Avenger as the ultimate charismatic hero. However, Marvel's new Iron Man replacement reinvents Tony in a far more shocking way... Meet Blacksmith, Iron Man's Literal Opposite In the recent original graphic novel Marvel Dimensions - from Alex Ross, Jason Millet, Josh Johnson and Ariana Maher - Marvel introduces the In-Verse. This alternate reality is the opposite of the mainstream Earth-616, with all Marvel's iconic heroes becoming villains and vice versa. In this world, Tony Stark's kidnapping didn't inspire him to seek redemption, but to give up his humanity to survive. Building a deadly suit of armor, he became Blacksmith, and helped found the paramilitary group known as 1st Strike rather than the heroic Avengers. In this reality, 1st Strike are the enforcers of 'the American Stronghold,' subjugating the rest of the world and anyone who fights for freedom within the imperial USA. Operating out of Saint Patrick's Cathedral, Tony only removes his mask in two situations: while enjoying debauched parties with his superhero brethren, and when he's about to execute one of their enemies, wanting it to be the last thing his victims see. Blacksmith Is Officially Iron Man's Equal In Every Way While the Marvel Universe is packed with evil Iron Men, few are as inventive or creative as Tony Stark. However, Marvel Dimensions confirms that 1st Strike already fought the Avengers, with the two teams finding themselves evenly matched in every way (during a multiversal battle orchestrated by the Grandmaster.) This dark reveal confirms that Blacksmith isn't just a 'road not taken' for Tony - he's the ultimate dark reflection of Iron Man, with all his combat skill and engineering brilliance funneled into crushing normal people under his metal jackboot. By revealing that the Avengers have already fought 1st Strike, Marvel Dimensions makes it much more likely the In-Verse will return in future. Later creative teams won't have to contrive a first meeting between these characters - they're already familiar enemies whose bad blood justifies conflict at first sight. Indeed, it can't sit easy on 616-Tony's shoulders to know his evil self is out there, using his genius to oppress an entire planet. Blacksmith Isn't The Only Evil Iron Man In 2026 While Marvel Dimensions introduces Blacksmith as Tony's evil opposite, the mainstream Iron Man comics have introduced Adam Ware. A young genius selected for the Tony Stark grant, Ware was kidnapped and tortured by AIM, who were seeking to create the next Iron Man. Shockingly, Adam seemingly revealed himself to be a villain, taking control of AIM in the aftermath of Tony's rescue attempt. Ware is particularly dangerous because he's not just an evil Iron Man, he's an evil Tony Stark - a once-a-generation inventor who views every challenge as a chance to evolve. With Adam revealing his villainous persona after a severe head injury - and being rebuilt with AIM tech - it's possible that he's not in control of his actions, and that AIM's 'Advanced Iron Man' is going through the same dark era as the young Tony Stark, soon to begin a similar quest for redemption. Until then, however, he's Tony's #1 threat. Iron Man has never had a convincing opposite number in Marvel Comics, but 2026 finds him with two - the In-Verse's literal replacement Blacksmith, and Tony's would-be evil successor, Adam Ware.
