Debuting in 1965, Galactus was conceived by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby as a new kind of villain - one who wasn't evil or power hungry, but a force of nature whose mere existence threatened to wipe out humanity. In 2025, the MCU realized that vision thanks to Ralph Ineson's portrayal of Galactus in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. But what if Galactus kept his near-omnipotent powers and outlook but moved to the side of the angels? Marvel Unveils Galactus' Heroic Opposite 'Great Galen' Marvel's Galactus replacement just debuted in the graphic novel Marvel Dimensions, from Alex Ross, Jason Millet, Josh Johnson and Ariana Maher. The comic depicts a new reality called the In-Verse which is the moral opposite of Earth-616 - a reality where Marvel's classic heroes are villains and vice versa. That also applies to Marvel's ultimate 'villain,' Galactus. In the comic's conclusion, Doctor Doom (or rather 'Brother Doom') leads a coalition of heroes against the In-Verse's Avengers, X-Men, Defenders and more. His trump card is a towering being called the Great Galen - this twisted universe's heroic Galactus. Ross' design for the character is jaw-dropping, with a pure white geometric beard and expansive golden armor, essentially inverting the character's classic helm. When the Great Galen appears, a villainous Silver Surfer flees before him, warning of the arrival of the "great emancipator." 'Galen' is Galactus' former name, back when he was a mortal alien scientist investigating the end of his multiverse. Given that this world's heroes hold it in a fascistic grasp and that the Great Galen emerges from another dimension, it seems that in this universe, Galactus' place in the cosmic order is taken by a godlike being who travels from world to world, freeing their populaces from control. The Great Galen's arrival is the story's moral endpoint, revealing that even in a universe where evil is seemingly supreme, the forces of good aren't out of the fight. This Isn't Galactus' First Heroic Redesign As impressive as the Great Galen is, this isn't the first time Marvel has turned Galactus into an outright hero. Indeed, it's arguable he fulfills this role in Marvel's mainstream canon. While Galactus eats worlds, he serves a purpose of preventing worlds turning stagnant and dangerous, and is collecting energy which will eventually birth the next cycle of the multiverse. However, he's also capable of even more immediate acts of good. In multiple canons, including Earth-616, Galactus has taken a 'Lifebringer' form, bringing life to fallen worlds rather than feeding on them. In Marvel's mainstream, this happened when the Ultimates forced Galactus back into his own 'incubator' tech, finally ending his hunger. Sadly, Galactus had to eventually reclaim his hunger to protect the universe, but time and again, it's been shown that when he gets the chance, he opts to protect and heal the galaxy rather than destroy. Galactus May Not Be a Marvel Hero... But His Mom Is A final footnote on Galactus' heroism is that ultimately, when he is able to help the galaxy, he's carrying on the legacy of his heroic mother, Taaia. A scientific genius and adventurer, Taaia joined the Defenders during a time travel adventure, and currently lives in the present of Marvel's Earth-616, working with ally Blue Marvel to combat the weird hidden threats of the Marvel Universe. While Galactus himself may be a force of destruction, Taaia at least understands that her son is a vital force in the universe, and would likely be happy to learn that in some realities, Galen isn't just a hero - he's a protector of entire realities.
