Marvel Unveils Wolverine's Altered Superpowers In "Feral" Redesign

Marvel's Wolverine is about to unlock the full "feral" extent of his powers, as Marvel unleashes a new design and declares "THE BEAST UNLEASHED!" Here's what we know about Logan's new look. For the majority of his time in Marvel lore, Wolverine has struggled with intense rage, often seeing himself as more animal than man. Usually, Logan is able to keep ahold of his sanity and honor, but when he's pushed to the limit, he becomes a ferocious killing machine. Usually, going 'feral' turns Wolverine into a slashing ball of hate, roaring at anyone who comes close. However, this time, it's literally turning him into a monster... Wolverine's Feral Side Is Unleashed in Twisted Transformation Marvel recently released solicit information for Wolverine #30, from Saladin Ahmed and Martín Cóccolo. The storyline sees Wolverine lured into a villainous plan to weaponize him, with Juan Ferreyra's blood-red cover showing Logan bathed in blood and with gigantic, predatory fangs, hair spreading across his body. So far, fans don't know who is behind this transformation - only that in Wolverine #39 an old friend will ask Logan to put his enhanced senses to use supporting a "charitable cause," only to land him in the middle of a plot to aim him at a tragic target. The summary for Wolverine #30 reveals: THE BEAST UNLEASHED! The moment you’ve been waiting for - WOLVERINE’s feral side fully emerges! But who is behind this, and will LOGAN be able to rein in his bestial temperament before innocent blood stains his hands and claws forever? Recent comics have explored Wolverine's nature as a 'Savage Champion' - a multiversal constant represented by one hero in each reality who perfectly balances human, animal and metal. Now, it seems that balance will be thrown severely out of whack. Wolverine's Powers Are Darker Than They Seem As shocking as Ferreyra's art is, this isn't the first time Wolverine has become a feral monster. The hero transformed in a similar way in 1993, after Magneto forcibly stripped the adamantium from his body. The trauma was so massive that Wolverine's powers went into overdrive, 'healing' him into an animalistic form. Wolverine was able to transform back when his adamantium was restored, but the story established that Logan's powers can turn him feral when his body is put through intense trauma - it may be that someone from his past is finally weaponizing that fact in their favor. The summary for Wolverine #29 stresses that Logan's enhanced senses will be key to this new arc - could he encounter something so "senses-shattering" that it messes with him on the genetic level? Is This the Return of the Dominant Species? Recent issues of Wolverine have seen Logan clash with his old enemy Romulus, and it's possible his feral transformation will tap into their shared "lupus sapiens" lore. Past X-Men stories have teased that there's a divergent species who evolved from canines instead of primates, looking like humans but fully apart. The "lupus sapiens" species theory tied together Marvel's many wolf-like mutants into an official subspecies, while also seemingly explaining why Romulus has spent centuries manipulating the lives of select mutants, Logan included, considering them his pack whether they liked it or not. While this was later explained as a lie spread by Romulus, it's supported by the existence of Dominant Species - a group of werewolf-like mutants with the same lupine powers, including large claws and enhanced senses. Given Romulus is back in the picture and Wolverine's animalistic nature has been further codified by the 'Savage Champion' concept, it would be an ideal point to revisit the idea of "lupus sapiens," especially as Logan is once again transformed into a beast.
