Marvel Ultimate Alliance Revival Has Gamers Hopeful

Marvel video games are in a rut right now, and, without waxing too nostalgic, it’s mainly disappointing how few ensemble titles have been explored lately, especially when so many sensational Marvel games used to be churned out. Spider-Man games have always been popular, for instance, but there are a handful of great Marvel ensemble games that were shelved and deserve to be revisited. There’d surely be a niche audience who’d love to see a successor to Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects’ stylistic fighting game, for example, but there’s one franchise that few fans would say no to a new installment from: Marvel Ultimate Alliance. The first Marvel Ultimate Alliance game is hailed as one of the best Marvel superhero games ever, if not the undisputed best, and enough time has passed that fans are once again hoping for another new entry in the series. With over 10,000 likes on Twitter/X, user KattNippxo isn’t alone when they express that “a new Ultimate Alliance game could save the world.” It’s been seven years since the last one was released, and fans are more than ready for another ensemble game that is a true celebration of Marvel’s comic book history and lore, with as inclusive and all-encompassing a playable character roster as possible. User greendevin15 agrees: “We need to manifest it harder. Cause the world needs a new one now, more than ever.” Marvel Ultimate Alliance is perhaps one of the purest and most refined distillations of Marvel Comics in a video game. Marvel’s Midnight Suns was also a terrific, more recent Marvel ensemble game, but it unfortunately failed to reach the same heights as Marvel Ultimate Alliance, which is perhaps more accessible in its gameplay. Of course, Marvel Ultimate Alliance fans have been burned before by their wishes for a new entry. As user Idontmissyaknow argues, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order was a monkey’s paw situation. We finally received a new Marvel Ultimate Alliance game after a 10-year dry spell, only for it to boast grindy, unsavory gameplay via dreaded ISO-8 crystals, and you’d be hard-pressed to find fans who preferred it to the previous games’ simplistic formula. Alternatively, users like SoulBadgai and KimballJackson would rather see X-Men Legends 3. Besides Insomniac’s Marvel’s Wolverine and Marvel’s Spider-Man 3, it seems like no Marvel game is safe from the chopping block, and there’s virtually no guarantee of any past Marvel franchise ever being revisited. With any luck, though, it hopefully won’t take another decade for fans to see a new Marvel Ultimate Alliance game.
